Bar Spacing Is the Cage Rule That Actually Matters

Two numbers size a cage and they answer different questions. The footprint and height are welfare minimums that vary by species: 76 × 46 × 46 cm for a finch or canary, 61 × 46 × 46 for a budgie, 61 × 61 × 61 for a cockatiel or lovebird, 91 × 61 × 122 for a grey or amazon, and 122 × 122 × 152 for a macaw. Bar spacing is the safety constraint and does not scale with the cage: 6 to 13 mm for finches, 10 to 13 for budgies, 13 to 16 for cockatiels, 19 to 25 for greys and 25 to 38 for cockatoos and macaws. A bird that can push its head between two bars can hang itself, so the spacing has to match the bird and not the cage's own size.
A budgie needs bars 10 to 13 mm apart and a macaw 25 to 38. Put the budgie in the macaw cage and it can get its head through — the size is a welfare question, the spacing is a safety one.
The spacing rule has a mechanism behind it
A bird climbing a cage wall pushes its head between two bars, and the skull passes at an angle that the neck and shoulders then cannot follow. If the gap is wide enough for the head and too narrow for the body, the bird is caught, and a caught bird panics and struggles downwards under its own weight. That is the whole of the mechanism, and it explains why the rule is a range rather than a maximum: too narrow traps a toe or a beak, too wide traps a head.
It follows that the danger is greatest when a small bird is housed in a cage bought for a bigger one — a very common decision, because a larger cage looks generous. A budgie in a cockatiel cage is usually fine at 13 mm; a budgie in a conure or grey cage at 19 to 25 mm is not. If you buy up in size, check the spacing separately, and if the cage is second-hand and unlabelled, measure between two bars with a ruler rather than estimating.
Horizontal room is what a bird uses
The tall narrow cage is a persistent design mistake. Parrots and finches fly and clamber horizontally; the vertical space above a perch is largely unused unless the bird is a species that climbs, and even then the climbing happens on the walls rather than through the middle. That is why the tool grows a multi-bird cage along its length rather than upwards: two cockatiels want a 91 × 61 cm floor, three want 122 × 61, and four want 152 × 61, with the height unchanged at 61.
Even so, the published minimums are minimums and not targets. The cage is where the bird spends the hours it is not out, and for a parrot species that is a cage-plus-out-of-cage arrangement rather than a cage alone. A macaw's stated minimum floor is 1.49 square metres; a common shop cage of 100 by 60 centimetres gives 0.60, which is forty per cent of it. Buying to the table is buying the floor, not the ceiling.
There is no legal standard, and the page says so
Unlike a travel crate, which is governed by an international regulation with a formula in it, a bird cage has no published standard in most jurisdictions. The figures in the table are the working minimums used across avian veterinary and rescue guidance — the numbers a rescue applies before it will rehome, and a vet quotes when asked. They agree closely with one another and none of them carries the force of a rule.
That absence is worth knowing rather than glossing over. A cage sold as suitable for a parrot has been described by its maker and by no one else, and the description is a marketing claim rather than a compliance statement. The table gives you an independent figure to hold it to, and the bar spacing gives you a number to check with a ruler in the shop — which is the one measurement a maker cannot describe away.

- Thirteen to sixteen millimetres. Below thirteen a cockatiel's toes and beak can catch; above sixteen a young or slender bird can get its head through. If a cage is marketed for cockatiels and conures together, measure it — the conure range starts at sixteen and the overlap is exactly one millimetre wide.
- How much bigger does a cage need to be for two birds?
- Half again on the floor area, taken on the length. Two cockatiels want 91 × 61 cm rather than 61 × 61, three want 122 × 61 and four want 152 × 61. This is a stated rule of thumb rather than a standard, and it assumes birds that get on: two birds that do not need two cages, and no amount of floor area fixes an incompatible pairing.
- Is a round cage really bad?
- It is a poor use of space before it is anything else. A round cage of a given width has less usable floor than a rectangular one of the same footprint, has no corner for a bird to retreat into, and converges at the top where the bars grow closer — which turns the spacing from a constant into a variable and creates a trap zone near the apex. The evidence for behavioural harm is thin; the geometric objections are not.
