What the clock change actually does

Daylight saving time does not create or destroy daylight — it relabels the hours so that the sun sets later on the clock during spring and summer. By moving clocks forward an hour, an hour of light that would have fallen in the early morning, when many people are asleep, lands in the evening instead, when they are awake to use it. In autumn the clocks go back, returning to standard time for the darker half of the year.

The two adjustments have nicknames that also serve as memory aids. "Spring forward" means the clocks jump ahead in spring; "fall back" means they move back in autumn (fall). Standard time is the baseline; daylight saving time is the shifted-forward version applied over the lighter months.

Why one day is 23 hours and another is 25

On the spring changeover, the clock skips an hour. In the United States it happens at 2:00 AM, which instantly becomes 3:00 AM — the hour from 2:00 to 3:00 simply does not exist locally that night. Because one hour is removed, that calendar day is only 23 hours long. Any alarm or event scheduled inside the missing hour is typically pushed to the next valid time.

On the autumn changeover the opposite happens: the clock is set back, so 2:00 AM becomes 1:00 AM and the hour from 1:00 to 2:00 is lived twice. That makes the day 25 hours long, and it creates an ambiguous hour — a timestamp like 1:30 AM occurs twice, which is why software records these moments in UTC to keep them distinct.

Why US and EU dates do not match

There is no single global date for switching. The United States springs forward on the second Sunday of March and falls back on the first Sunday of November. The European Union springs forward on the last Sunday of March and falls back on the last Sunday of October. So for a couple of weeks in spring and again in autumn, one region has already switched while the other has not.

During those gaps the usual time difference between, say, New York and London temporarily shrinks or grows by an hour. This is why a meeting time that normally holds all year can slip during changeover weeks.
