How Many Calories Should You Eat Per Meal?
Published 2/12/2026 · 2 min read · Health calculators
There is no single right number, but a common approach is to split your daily calories across three meals plus snacks. On a 2,000-calorie day that is roughly 500–700 calories per main meal and 100–200 per snack. Adjust the split to your own daily total, appetite and schedule.

How to split your daily calories across meals and snacks, with typical per-meal ranges and how to adjust them to your goals.
Start from your daily total
Per-meal targets only make sense once you know your daily calorie needs. That figure comes from your basal metabolic rate and how active you are — your total daily energy expenditure, or TDEE. A common reference point is 2,000 calories a day, but real needs range from roughly 1,600 to 3,000 depending on age, size, sex and activity.
Once you have that daily number, splitting it per meal is simple arithmetic. The point is not to hit an exact figure every time but to keep the pattern roughly balanced across the day, so no single meal swings your energy too far in either direction.
Typical per-meal ranges
On a 2,000-calorie day, three main meals of about 500–700 calories each plus one or two snacks of 100–200 covers the total comfortably. Breakfast is often lighter and dinner a little heavier, but that is habit, not a rule. If you eat more or fewer times a day, spread the same total across those occasions instead.
Balance matters as much as the number
Calories are only half the picture. A meal built around protein, fibre-rich vegetables and some whole grains keeps you fuller than the same calories from refined snacks. Aim to include a protein source at each main meal, since it supports satiety and helps preserve muscle — especially if you are eating at a deficit.

- Is it better to eat 3 big meals or 5 small ones?
- For weight, the daily total matters far more than how you split it. Choose the pattern you can stick to and that keeps you comfortably full.
- How many calories should a snack be?
- Roughly 100–200 calories works for most people. A piece of fruit with yoghurt or a handful of nuts fits that range and adds nutrients rather than empty calories.
- Should dinner be my smallest meal?
- Not necessarily. Meal timing has a small effect at most; what you eat across the whole day matters more than which meal is largest.
- Do I need to count calories at every meal?
- No. Counting for a week or two teaches you what typical portions look like; after that, most people manage well by eye with occasional checks.
