What Mbps actually measures

Internet speed is measured in megabits per second, or Mbps. A bit is the smallest unit of data, and a megabit is one million bits. Note the lowercase b: a megabit (Mb) is eight times smaller than a megabyte (MB). That is why a 100 Mbps connection downloads a file at roughly 12.5 megabytes per second, not 100.

Speed is about how much data flows per second, which matters for smooth streaming and quick downloads. It is different from latency, the delay before data starts arriving, which matters most for gaming and calls. A plan can have high speed but poor latency, so both figures are worth checking.

Speed per activity

Streaming is the biggest driver. Standard-definition video runs on about 1 to 3 Mbps, HD on around 5 Mbps, and 4K on 15 to 25 Mbps. Video calls need roughly 2 to 4 Mbps for a clear picture, and online gaming typically uses only 3 to 6 Mbps but is very sensitive to latency and jitter. Music streaming and browsing are light, under 1 Mbps each.

These are per-stream figures, so the same person watching one 4K show counts once, but two TVs each on 4K count twice. Cloud backups, software updates, and smart-home devices add a quiet baseline that can spike unexpectedly, which is why a buffer above your calculated peak keeps everything smooth.

Adding it up for the household

Picture a busy evening: one 4K movie (25 Mbps), one HD show (5 Mbps), a work video call (4 Mbps), and a gamer (5 Mbps). That is 39 Mbps of real demand. Add a 40 percent buffer and you land near 55 Mbps, so a 100 Mbps plan handles it easily with room for background updates and guests.

Do not forget upload speed if you work from home, back up to the cloud, or stream your own video, since many plans give far less upload than download. Is more speed always better?
Only up to the point where it exceeds your peak demand. Beyond that, extra speed sits unused and you pay for capacity you never reach. Once your plan comfortably covers everyone's simultaneous activities plus a buffer, spending more improves nothing; latency, Wi-Fi coverage, and router quality then matter more than raw Mbps.
Why is my real speed lower than my plan?
Advertised speeds are the maximum under ideal conditions. Wi-Fi loss, distance from the router, older devices, network congestion at peak hours, and the far server's own limits all shave off real throughput. A wired test near the router shows your true line speed better than Wi-Fi across the house.
How much speed does a single 4K stream need?
Most services recommend about 15 to 25 Mbps for a steady 4K stream, with 25 Mbps giving a safe margin for the highest bitrates. If several people stream 4K at once, multiply: two streams want roughly 50 Mbps of dedicated capacity, which is why 4K-heavy homes benefit from plans of 100 Mbps or more.
Does the number of devices matter more than the number of people?
What truly counts is simultaneous active connections, not head count. One person can run a laptop call, a phone download, and a smart TV at once, while a family may share a single stream. Estimate the busiest realistic moment and size for that, rather than simply multiplying by the number of residents.
