To calculate a grade average, multiply each grade by its weight, add those products together, and divide by the sum of the weights. When every item counts equally, the weights cancel and you simply add the grades and divide by how many there are. For example, a homework grade of 80 at weight 20, a midterm of 90 at weight 30, and a final of 85 at weight 50 give (80×20 + 90×30 + 85×50) ÷ 100 = 8,550 ÷ 100 = 85.5. A percentage average and a GPA differ: a percentage stays on a 0 to 100 scale, while a GPA maps letter grades to points (commonly A = 4.0) and averages those points instead.

Simple average versus weighted average

A simple average treats every grade as equally important: add them all up and divide by the count. Three grades of 70, 80 and 90 give (70 + 80 + 90) ÷ 3 = 80. This is the right method only when each item genuinely carries the same weight — three equal quizzes, for instance.

A weighted average is needed when items count for different shares of the final grade — say the final exam is worth half and homework a fifth. Each grade is multiplied by its weight before adding, so heavier items pull the result toward themselves. When all weights happen to be equal, the weighted formula collapses back to the simple average, so it is the more general rule.

A worked example with weights

Suppose a course grade is built from homework worth 20 percent, a midterm worth 30 percent, and a final worth 50 percent. You scored 80 on homework, 90 on the midterm, and 85 on the final. Multiply each by its weight: 80 × 20 = 1,600, 90 × 30 = 2,700, and 85 × 50 = 4,250. Add them: 1,600 + 2,700 + 4,250 = 8,550.

Now divide by the total weight, which is 20 + 30 + 50 = 100: that gives 8,550 ÷ 100 = 85.5. So the weighted course grade is 85.5, higher than the plain average of the three numbers (85) because your strongest score sat on the heaviest component. Always divide by the sum of the weights, not by the number of items — that is the step people most often skip.

Percentage average versus GPA

A percentage average keeps grades on a 0 to 100 scale and averages the raw numbers, as in the example above. A GPA (grade point average) works differently: each letter grade is first converted to points on a fixed scale — commonly A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0 — and you average those points, usually weighted by course credits. So a percentage and a GPA are two different currencies; you cannot compare 85.5 directly with 3.7 without a conversion table.

Which one you report depends on your institution. Many schools track a percentage per course and a GPA across courses, so both coexist. The averaging idea is the same either way — a weighted mean — but the scale and the conversion step differ, and a grade calculator lets you switch between them without redoing the arithmetic by hand.

What if my grades all count equally?
Then a simple average is enough: add the grades and divide by how many there are. This is just the weighted formula with every weight equal, so the weights cancel out. Use the weighted method only when items carry different shares — otherwise the two give the same number.
Do the weights have to add up to 100?
No. The weights can be any numbers — 1, 2 and 3, or 20, 30 and 50 — because you divide by their actual sum at the end. Using weights that add to 100 is convenient since each one reads as a percentage, but the formula works with any consistent set. Just be sure to divide by whatever total the weights add up to.
How is a GPA different from a percentage?
A percentage keeps grades on a 0 to 100 scale and averages the raw numbers. A GPA first maps each letter grade to points — often A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on — then averages those points, usually weighted by course credits. Both are weighted means, but the scales differ, so a GPA of 3.7 and a percentage of 85 are not the same figure and need a conversion table to compare.
What grade do I need on the final to reach a target?
Work backward from the weighted formula. Take your target average, multiply by the total weight to get the total weighted score you need, subtract the weighted scores you already have, and divide the remainder by the final's weight.
