Multiply the bill by the tip percentage, add it on, then divide by the number of people. Here's the method, an example, and how tipping norms differ.

Work out the tip

A tip is just a percentage of the bill, so multiply the two. For an easy mental version, take 10% (move the decimal one place left) and adjust from there: 10% of $60 is $6, so 20% is $12 and 15% is $9. Written out, 18% of $60 is 60 × 0.18 = $10.80. Any tip percentage follows the same one-step multiplication.

Add it and split

Add the tip to the bill for the total you actually pay, then divide by the number of people to share it. With a $60 bill and a $10.80 tip, the total is $70.80; split four ways that is 70.80 ÷ 4 = $17.70 each. If you are paying cash, rounding each share up to $18 is a friendly way to cover the odd cents.

Before or after tax?

Strictly, a tip rewards the service, so it is traditionally figured on the pre-tax bill. In practice many people just apply the percentage to the final total, which is simpler and only a little more generous. Either approach is perfectly acceptable — pick one and don't overthink the few cents of difference.

Tipping norms differ

How much to tip is cultural, not mathematical. In the United States, 15–20% is expected at sit-down restaurants and often more for great service. Across much of Europe, service is sometimes included, and people commonly round up or leave 5–10%. When travelling, a quick check of local custom saves both under-tipping and over-tipping.
