What you need to know

Three numbers decide the answer: your current grade before the final, the final exam's weight in the overall mark, and the overall grade you are aiming for. The current grade is the weighted average of everything already counted; the weight is often on the syllabus, like '30% of the course'. With those three, the rest is one formula.

The formula

The grade you need is: needed = (goal − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight written as a decimal. In plain terms: your current work already covers part of the total, so subtract that, and whatever is left must come from the final — divided by how much the final counts. It rearranges the weighted-average that produces your final mark.

A worked example

Say you have an 82% average, you want to finish the course at 85%, and the final is worth 30% of the grade. Plug in: (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92%. So you need 92% on the final to reach your goal — challenging but possible, which tells you exactly how hard to push.

Reading the result

If the number comes out above 100%, your target simply can't be reached on the final alone — you would need to lower the goal or find extra credit. If it comes out at zero or below, congratulations: you have already secured your target no matter how the final goes. Anywhere in between is your real number to aim for.
