What Is Your BMR? Basal Metabolic Rate Explained

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns per day just to keep you alive at rest — powering your heart, brain, breathing and cells. The most widely used estimate is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which uses your weight, height, age and sex. For example, a 30-year-old man weighing 176 lb at 5 ft 11 in has a BMR of roughly 1,780 kcal/day. Your BMR is the largest part of your daily calorie use, typically 60-70%.

What BMR actually measures
BMR is the minimum energy needed to run the body's essential functions while you lie still, awake and fasted in a comfortable room. It covers your beating heart, breathing, brain activity, kidney filtering and the constant maintenance of every cell. It does not include the energy for walking, digesting food or exercising.
In a lab, BMR is measured by indirect calorimetry — analysing the oxygen you use and the carbon dioxide you produce. At home you cannot measure it directly, so equations estimate it from your body data. These estimates are close for most people but can be off by 10% or more for individuals.
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation
Published in 1990, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is regarded as the most accurate general BMR estimate. It uses weight in kilograms, height in centimeters and age in years: BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) + s, where s is +5 for men and −161 for women. Worked example: a 30-year-old man weighing 176 lb (80 kg) and 5 ft 11 in (180 cm) tall. BMR = (10 × 80) + (6.25 × 180) − (5 × 30) + 5 = 800 + 1,125 − 150 + 5 = 1,780 kcal/day. For a woman of the same size and age, subtract 166 more (the difference between +5 and −161), giving about 1,614 kcal/day.
What raises or lowers your BMR
Muscle is the biggest lever you can influence: lean tissue burns more energy at rest than fat, so two people of the same weight can have different BMRs. Larger, taller and younger bodies burn more; BMR falls gradually with age as muscle is lost. Sex plays a role too, largely because men typically carry more muscle.
Some factors shift BMR temporarily. Fever, an over- or under-active thyroid, pregnancy and certain medications can all raise or lower it. Very low-calorie dieting can reduce BMR modestly as the body adapts, which is one reason extreme diets often stall. Your BMR is a starting point, not a fixed destiny — building muscle and staying active are the practical ways to support it.

- Is BMR the same as the calories I need each day?
- No. BMR is your at-rest baseline. Your full daily need — the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) — adds the calories you burn through activity and digestion, so it is higher than your BMR.
- How accurate is a BMR calculator?
- For most people the Mifflin-St Jeor estimate lands within about 10% of a lab measurement. It can be less accurate at the extremes of body composition, such as very muscular or very high-body-fat individuals.
- Does BMR drop as I get older?
- Yes, gradually. As people age they tend to lose muscle, which lowers BMR. Regular strength training and enough protein help slow that decline.
- Should I eat only my BMR to lose weight?
- No. Eating below your BMR for long periods is not recommended and can leave you short of nutrients. Weight loss is planned from your TDEE with a moderate deficit — speak to a professional before cutting calories sharply.
