Frequently asked questions

What is Baby Name Generator?

Filter a curated name set by gender, origin, style and letter, with meanings and a shortlist.

When would I actually use this?

The lighter half of preparing for a birth: narrowing a shortlist of names by origin, style, first letter and meaning, and working out the odds on eye colour from both parents — and from the grandparents, who are what reveal a recessive nobody can see.

What is the most common mistake?

Reading the eye-colour odds as a prediction. It is a Punnett square on the classical simplification, and real eye colour is polygenic — several genes contribute, hazel and green sit on a spectrum rather than in boxes, and an infant's eyes often darken through the first year. The output is a probability over a family, never a forecast for a child.

How is Baby Name Generator different from Baby Eye Color Predictor?

They sit next to each other but answer different questions: Baby Eye Color Predictor is the one to open when you need it to punnett odds for your baby's eye colour from both parents — and the grandparents, which reveal hidden recessives. Pick whichever matches what you're starting from — both are free.

Is there a tool for the next step?

Name Number Calculator is the closest one after this: Convert a name into its number in the Pythagorean and Chaldean systems at once, with a letter-by-letter table, both charts and the Chaldean compound number.

What else is worth having open alongside it?

Name Randomizer and Random Cat/Dog Name Generator — they come up in the same task often enough to be worth a second tab.

Where do the figures come from?

The name set is curated per language, with each entry's origin and meaning, rather than one English list translated six times — a name's popularity and its feel do not survive translation. The eye-colour odds are Mendelian inheritance applied to the two-gene model taught in schools, used here because it is the model the question is usually asked in, and knowingly simpler than the biology.
