Mileage rates in Ireland

Using your own car for work in Ireland is reimbursed or deducted at €0.418 per kilometre on the first kilometres of the year, with the rest of the scale below. Paid or claimed at that rate or under, it is free of tax.

The official scale

Band 3 — 5,501 to 25,000 km31.78c31.79c39.22c
Band 4 — over 25,000 km20.56c23.85c25.87c

Worth knowing

The bands are cumulative within the year and they do not fall monotonically: band 2 pays substantially more per kilometre than band 1, because the scale front-loads the fixed cost of running a car rather than spreading it. A fully electric car is reimbursed at the 1,201-1,500 cc rates; a hybrid at the rate for its actual engine size. In force since 1 September 2022.

Important

A general overview, not tax advice. These scales are revised on a fixed date each year and the figures above were read on 2026-09-03 — check the year your journey falls in before claiming.
