Mileage rates in the United Kingdom

Using your own car for work in the United Kingdom is reimbursed or deducted at 55p per mile on the first kilometres of the year, with the rest of the scale below. Paid or claimed at that rate or under, it is free of tax.

The official scale

Bicycles20p20p

Worth knowing

The car rate rose to 55p on 6 April 2026, having been 45p for well over a decade — so any figure written before that date is wrong by ten pence a mile. The 10,000-mile threshold is per employee per tax year and applies to cars and vans only: motorcycles and bicycles run at one rate throughout.

Important

A general overview, not tax advice. These scales are revised on a fixed date each year and the figures above were read on 2026-09-03 — check the year your journey falls in before claiming.
