Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish بیروت (beyrût), from Arabic بَيْرُوت (bayrūt), ultimately from Phoenician 𐤁𐤓𐤕 (brt /bērūt/), from Proto-West Semitic *biʾrāt- (“wells”). Doublet of Berytus and Beeroth.
