    Like everyone else who lifts weights, I wanted to maximize my gains and give myself the best chance to succeed.

    But it is impossible to prepare for competition and make the same kinds of gains as you would if you were training with full intensity and not dieting. When you're training to compete, you have to focus on details, bringing out small muscles, separation. And it's obvious that you can't make maximum gains while you are restricting your food intake.

    If you’re starting off skinny, you can probably get newbie gains for several months.
