From Middle English nyntene, nynetene, from Old English niġontīene, niġontēne, from Proto-Germanic *newuntehun. Cognate with Dutch negentien, Low German negenteihn, Hunsrik neinzen, German neunzehn, Danish nitten. Equivalent to nine + -teen
