In short

To estimate walking time, divide the distance by your walking speed: time = distance ÷ speed. A typical adult walks at about 3 mph on flat ground, so a 1.5-mile walk takes roughly 1.5 ÷ 3 = 0.5 hours, or 30 minutes. Slow down for hills, loads, crowds or older age, and speed up for brisk fitness walking. The calculator lets you set your own pace for an accurate estimate.

Walking time is distance divided by speed. Learn the average walking speed of about 3 mph and how to estimate the time for any distance.

The average walking speed

Most healthy adults walk at about 3 mph on level ground, covering a mile in roughly 20 minutes. That is a comfortable, everyday pace, not a stroll and not a power walk. It is a solid default when you have no better information, but your own speed depends on your legs, fitness and the terrain.

Brisk walking, the pace recommended for health benefits, is faster — around 4 mph, where you breathe harder but can still talk. Race walkers and very fit walkers go faster still. The calculator lets you choose a speed so the estimate reflects how you actually walk.

Applying the time formula

Time equals distance divided by speed, so at 3 mph a 3-mile walk takes 3 ÷ 3 = 1 hour. Keep the units matched: miles with miles per hour gives hours. To turn a fractional hour into minutes, multiply the decimal part by 60 — 0.25 hours is 15 minutes.

This makes route planning easy. If a trail is 6 miles and you walk at 3 mph, budget 2 hours plus breaks. For a full day of hiking, add extra time for rest stops, photos and lunch, because moving time is only part of the picture.

What slows you down

Hills are the biggest factor. Climbing steeply can cut your speed to well under 2 mph, and a common hiking rule adds about 30 minutes for every 1,000 feet of ascent on top of the flat-ground time. A heavy backpack, snow, mud or a loose surface all slow you further.

Age, crowds and traffic lights matter too. Older adults and young children walk more slowly, and city walking means stopping at crossings. For urban routes, adding 10 to 20% to your estimate is a reasonable buffer for stops you cannot avoid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average walking speed?
For a healthy adult on flat ground it is about 3 mph, roughly a mile every 20 minutes. Brisk walking is nearer 4 mph, and pace drops with age, hills, loads and crowded paths.
How long does it take to walk a mile?
At the average 3 mph, a mile takes about 20 minutes. A brisk walker covers it in around 15 minutes, while a relaxed stroll may take 25 minutes or more.
Do hills really change the time that much?
Yes. Climbing steeply slows you well below 2 mph, and a common hiking rule adds about 30 minutes for every 1,000 feet of ascent. Descents are faster but rough terrain can still cost time.
How many steps is a mile of walking?
A mile is roughly 2,000 steps for an average adult, though it varies with height and stride length. Taller people take fewer, longer strides, so use step counts as a rough guide rather than an exact measure.
