How to Calculate Running Speed: Distance Over Time

Running speed is distance divided by time: speed = distance ÷ time. If you run 3 miles in 24 minutes, that is 0.4 hours, so your speed is 3 ÷ 0.4 = 7.5 mph. Speed is the inverse of pace — pace tells you minutes per mile, while speed tells you miles per hour. To convert, divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile to get mph, or divide 60 by your speed to get pace.

The speed formula and units

Speed is simply how much distance you cover per unit of time. The core formula is speed = distance ÷ time, and the trick is keeping units consistent. If your distance is in miles, put time in hours to get miles per hour. If you use meters and seconds, you get meters per second, which you can multiply by 2.237 to reach mph.

The most common mistake is mixing minutes and hours. A 24-minute run is not 24 hours; convert it to 0.4 hours by dividing 24 by 60 first. The calculator handles this automatically — you type distance and a time in hours, minutes and seconds, and it returns a clean speed figure.

Speed versus pace

Speed and pace describe the same effort from opposite directions. Speed is distance per time — how far you go each hour, in mph. Pace is time per distance — how many minutes each mile takes. Treadmills usually show mph, while race and running-app displays usually show pace, so knowing both is useful.

Because they are inverses, converting is one division. A pace of 8 minutes per mile is 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph. A speed of 6 mph is 60 ÷ 6 = 10 minutes per mile. Whenever your speed goes up, your pace number goes down, which trips up beginners who expect both to move the same way.

Average versus instantaneous speed

The formula gives average speed over the whole run. During the run your actual speed rises and falls — faster downhill, slower on climbs and at the start before you warm up. A GPS watch estimates instantaneous speed second by second, but for planning workouts the average is what matters.

For sprints, the same formula works over a short distance. Covering 100 meters in 12 seconds is 100 ÷ 12 = 8.33 meters per second, or about 18.6 mph. Because sprints are so short, small timing errors matter a lot, so use an accurate timer or the calculator's second-level input.

What is a good running speed for a beginner?
Many beginners run comfortably around 5 to 6 mph, which is a jog. There is no single right number — a good speed is one you can sustain while still holding a short conversation, and it rises as your fitness improves.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile. A 10-minute-per-mile pace becomes 60 ÷ 10 = 6 mph. The same works in reverse: 60 divided by your speed gives your pace.
Is treadmill speed the same as outdoor speed?
The number is the same, but effort differs. A treadmill removes wind resistance and moves the belt for you, so many runners set a slight incline of 1% to make the effort closer to running on flat ground outdoors.
Should I track speed or pace when I train?
Runners usually think in pace because race goals are set that way, while treadmill users think in speed. Pick whichever your equipment and races use, and let the calculator convert when you need the other one.
