Sixty-three days is the right number and it is measured from the wrong event for most people. Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center puts canine gestation at an average of 63 days from ovulation, and from the date of the first breeding at 63 plus or minus seven — a two-week spread for the same pregnancy. The reason is biological: sperm survive several days in the bitch's tract, the eggs need two to three more days to mature after ovulation, and a bitch is usually mated over a window rather than on one day, so the mating date can sit anywhere from several days before conception to a day after. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives an even wider figure from breeding, 58 to 72 days, and says outright that breeding dates do not correlate with whelping as closely as ovulation does. The calculator takes a mating date and adds 63, then shows a window of 58 to 68 days. For a mating on 25 August that is a due date of 27 October and a window from 22 October to 1 November. Cornell's plus-or-minus seven on the same mating runs from 20 October to 3 November, and Merck's from 22 October to 5 November — so the tool's window is four days shorter at the late end than the published one, and there is no ovulation or progesterone option to narrow it properly. Timing from a progesterone-confirmed ovulation is what turns the range into a date: Cornell gives 63 plus or minus one to two days from that point, and Merck 64 to 66 days from the LH peak.
Sixty-three days is measured from ovulation, not from the mating. Counted from a mating date the same pregnancy spreads over two weeks, because sperm survive for days and a bitch is often mated more than once. What the calculator does with that, and where its window stops four days early.
Sixty-three days from ovulation, not from the mating
The figure everyone knows is real and it belongs to a different clock. Cornell puts canine gestation at an average of 63 days from ovulation, and that average is tight — the same source gives 63 plus or minus one to two days once ovulation has been pinned down by progesterone testing. Merck states the same thing from a hormone landmark slightly earlier in the sequence: parturition terminates pregnancy 64 to 66 days after the LH peak. From the physiological event, canine pregnancy is one of the most predictable in domestic animals.
The imprecision comes entirely from the substitution most people have to make. A mating date is not an ovulation date, and three separate things pull them apart. Sperm survive in the bitch's tract for several days, so a mating that happened on Monday can still fertilise eggs released on Thursday. The eggs themselves are not ready at the moment of ovulation — Cornell notes they need two to three more days to mature. And a bitch is usually mated across a window of two or three days or more, so "the mating date" is often a choice among several. Merck's summary of the consequence is blunt: breeding dates do not correlate with whelping dates as closely as actual ovulation does.
What the calculator does with a mating date
It asks which date you actually have, and that is the whole design. Give it a mating date and it draws a window from mating plus 56 to mating plus 72, because that is what the published ranges support. Give it an ovulation date — from progesterone testing — and the window tightens to 61 to 65, because pinning ovulation removes the part of the spread that mating dates cannot remove. It divides the elapsed time into three stages: embryonic to day 21, fetal from day 22 to day 42, late gestation after that. The two windows differ by eleven days for the same pregnancy, which is not a rounding difference: it is the cost of not knowing when the eggs were released.
The number it adds, 63, is the from-ovulation figure, applied to a mating date. That is the standard practice and it is defensible — a mating date is usually within a few days of ovulation, so 63 is a reasonable central estimate — but it means the stated window is doing all the work, and the stated window is narrower than the published one. Merck's range from the first breeding accepted runs to 72 days; the tool stops at 68. On a 25 August mating that is the difference between a window closing on 1 November and one closing on 5 November, and a bitch who whelps on 3 November has done nothing unusual while the tool has been reporting her as overdue for two days.
The weeks, and what a vet can actually see
The first three weeks — the tool's embryonic stage — are the ones with nothing to see. The embryos are not yet attached for part of it, the bitch usually behaves normally, and any appetite change or quiet spell in this period is as likely to be nothing as to be something. This is the stretch where owners look for signs and find whatever they were hoping for, and it is precisely the stretch in which no sign is reliable.
From roughly the fourth week onward the pregnancy becomes something a vet can find rather than something an owner can guess. Cornell describes ultrasound measurements of the puppies at about the midpoint of gestation as a way of estimating the due date, which is the practical answer to when a scan is worth booking. A radiograph is the test that counts puppies, and it only works late, because a puppy skeleton has to mineralise before it shows up on an X-ray at all — that is why a litter count is a last-fortnight question rather than an early one. The exact earliest day for each of these varies by clinic and by equipment, and no published figure for them is quoted here because none was verified for this article.
The whelping window and the signs that it has started
The clearest signal is a temperature drop. Cornell describes a fall below 99 °F within 24 hours of whelping, and notes that the low reading typically lasts around eight hours — which means a once-a-day check can miss it entirely and a twice-daily rectal temperature during the last week is what actually catches it. Behaviour arrives alongside: extreme nesting, shredding bedding, restlessness, discomfort and increased panting, usually 6 to 12 hours before whelping though sometimes persisting for 24 to 36.
Labour itself has three stages: contractions with the cervix dilating, expulsion of a puppy, expulsion of that puppy's placenta. Cornell puts the normal rhythm at zero to thirty minutes for each puppy to be born, with up to two hours between puppies still counting as normal — and says to contact a vet if more than two hours pass between deliveries. Two hours is the number worth writing on the wall of the whelping room, because it converts an anxious night into a decision with a threshold, and because a bitch who is straining without producing is a different situation from one who is resting between puppies.
Three places the tool will mislead you
Two things it used to get wrong here, and no longer does. The late edge of the mating window closed at 68 days where Merck's published range runs to 72, so a bitch inside the normal range could be shown as past her window; it now runs to 72. And the days-remaining counter was clamped at zero, so a bitch 117 days past the date you typed was displayed as "0 days remaining", stage three, with a whelping date 54 days in the past and nothing to say the numbers had stopped meaning anything. Past the late edge it now names how many days past, and says that a bitch past term is a vet's problem and not a calculator's. A date in the future is no longer treated as a pregnancy either: it is labelled a projection, with no elapsed count and no stage.
Third, and easiest to trip over, the tool does not check that the mating date is in the past. Enter a date three months from now and it reports 0 days elapsed, 160 days remaining and stage one, embryonic — as though a pregnancy that has not begun were already under way. Any of these is easy to spot once you know to look; none of them announces itself. Read the whelping date and the window, and treat the elapsed and remaining counters as decoration.
