Dog Years to Human Years: The Real Formula (Not ×7)

There is no single number to multiply by. The modern method from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) counts a dog's first year as about 15 human years, the second year as about 9 more (roughly 24 by age two), and each year after that as about 4 to 5 human years depending on breed size. Large and giant breeds age faster than small ones, so a 10-year-old small dog is younger in human terms than a 10-year-old great dane. The tired "×7" rule badly overstates early aging and understates later aging.

Why the "×7" rule is wrong
The idea that one dog year equals seven human years has no scientific basis — it likely began as a marketing shortcut to encourage yearly vet visits. Dogs do not age at a steady rate. A one-year-old dog is already physically mature and can reproduce, which no seven-year-old human can. So the first year is worth far more than seven human years, and later years far fewer.
A 2019 study of DNA methylation even proposed a logarithmic formula, but for everyday use the AVMA's simple staged approach is accurate enough and easy to remember. The key insight is the same: aging front-loads into puppyhood, then slows down.
How breed size changes the math
After age two, small breeds (under 20 lb) age about 4 human years per calendar year, medium breeds about 5, and large or giant breeds (over 50 lb) about 6 or more. That is why a great dane is considered senior around 6, while a chihuahua may not be senior until 10 or 11. Larger dogs simply have shorter lifespans, so each year counts for more.

Worked example: a 5-year-old labrador
A labrador is a large breed. Year one counts as 15, year two adds 9 (total 24), and years three, four and five add about 6 each (18 more). That gives 24 + 18 = 42 human years. The same 5-year-old as a small terrier would be about 24 + (3 × 4) = 36 human years — a six-year gap driven entirely by size.
