To build a good word search, pick a grid whose side is about three characters longer than your longest word, then place roughly one word per 15 to 20 grid squares — around 12 to 15 words in a 15 by 15 grid. Place the longest words first and diagonally, allow words to cross and share letters, and mix all eight directions for adults while limiting a children's puzzle to left-to-right and top-to-bottom. Fill the empty squares with letters drawn from the words themselves rather than uniformly random letters, because uniform filler makes rare letters like Q, X and Z act as giveaways.

Grid size and word density

A 15 by 15 grid holds 225 squares. Twelve words averaging seven letters use 84 of them, about 37 percent, which leaves enough filler for words to hide without leaving vast empty regions. Below roughly 25 percent occupancy the puzzle feels padded; above about 55 percent the words start colliding constantly and the grid becomes a dense block where everything is findable by accident.

Longest word plus three is a reliable rule for the side length, because a word placed diagonally needs as many rows as it has letters. A ten-letter word will not fit diagonally in a 10 by 10 grid without occupying the full corner-to-corner line, which is the first place any solver looks.

Directions, and matching difficulty to the age of the solver

There are eight possible directions: four straight and four diagonal, each of which can also run backwards. For readers under about seven, use only left-to-right and top-to-bottom, since reversed words fight the reading direction they are still learning. From roughly eight, add diagonals downward. Full eight-direction grids with reversals suit teenagers and adults.

Theme also affects difficulty more than people expect. A list where several words share a prefix or a common ending — planet names, or verbs all ending in -ing — makes each partial match ambiguous and slows solvers down far more than adding two extra directions would.

Why the filler letters matter

If the filler is drawn uniformly from the alphabet, every letter appears about equally often — but real words do not use letters equally. A grid whose hidden words contain one Q surrounded by uniformly random filler will show that Q as an obvious island, and experienced solvers hunt rare letters first for exactly this reason.

Sampling the filler from your own word list solves this in one step: the letter frequencies of the noise then match the letter frequencies of the signal, and no letter stands out. It costs nothing and is the single change that most improves a home-made grid.

Should words be allowed to overlap?
Yes, on shared letters. Overlaps raise difficulty, pack more words into the same space and break up the visual stripes that make a grid look mechanical. What you must avoid is one word overwriting another with a conflicting letter — a generator checks this automatically, by hand you have to.
How many words should a puzzle for children have?
Around six to eight words in a 10 by 10 grid, all reading left to right or top to bottom, with words of four to seven letters. That gives a five to ten minute solve for a child of seven or eight without the frustration that ends the activity early.
How do I stop a word appearing by accident?
Search the finished grid for each answer in all eight directions and count the hits: more than one means the filler happened to spell it a second time. Short entries of three or four letters cause almost all of these collisions, which is a good reason to keep the minimum word length at five.
