Mars orbits outside the Earth's, which frees it from the constraint that pins Mercury and Venus near the Sun: it can be anywhere in the zodiac, including directly opposite your Sun sign, and the measurement confirms it reaches all twelve. What it is not is regular. Stepping the site's ephemeris day by day from 1966 to 2026 and recording every complete stay in a sign gives 409 of them, ranging from 8 days to 236, averaging 53. The short ones are ordinary passes that happen to clip a boundary; the long ones are retrograde loops, where Earth overtakes Mars, Mars appears to reverse, crosses back into the sign it had just left and then crosses forward again — three boundary crossings instead of one, and half a year in the same sign. That is why a Mars sign cannot be read off a birthday the way a Sun sign can, and why the calculator asks for the year before anything else.

What a retrograde loop does to a chart
Earth completes a lap in a year and Mars in about 687 days, so we catch it up roughly every 26 months. For a few weeks around that overtaking, Mars appears to stop, run backwards against the stars, stop again and resume — a loop in the sky that has been drawn and puzzled over since antiquity, and the observation that Ptolemy's epicycles were built to explain. Its practical consequence here is that whole cohorts of people born months apart share a Mars sign, while two people born a fortnight apart in a fast passage can have different ones.
The placement people look for second
Mars is the one personal placement that carries real information beyond the Sun sign, and the arithmetic is the reason: Mercury adds a refinement, Venus adds a small one, Mars can be anywhere. The tradition assigns it to drive, appetite and the way a person meets resistance. Read as tradition that is worth knowing; read as prediction it is worth nothing, and the fact that the underlying position is real astronomy does not lend the reading any of that reality.

- Why does the calculator want a year and not just a birthday?
- Because Mars is in a different sign on the same calendar day from one year to the next — its circuit takes about 687 days, so it never repeats on a yearly rhythm the way the Sun does. Two people born on 14 March, one in 1990 and one in 1991, will generally have different Mars signs, and there is no shortcut table that gets round it.
- Can Mars be opposite my Sun sign?
- Yes, and only Mars among the three can. On the measured sample it sits six signs from the Sun on 3.0 % of dates — that is opposition, the configuration in which Mars is closest to Earth, brightest in the sky and visible all night. The inner planets can never manage it, which is the sharpest practical difference between them.
- Do I need a birth time for this one?
- Less often than for the Moon and rarely enough to ignore. Mars covers roughly half a degree a day in direct motion and far less around a station, so a whole day usually sits inside one sign. The exception is a birth during one of those slow turns near a boundary, where the planet can hover on the same degree for a week — there the hour matters, and the calculator's degree reading is what tells you.
