Mercury is the innermost planet, so from Earth it never strays far from the Sun: the site's ephemeris puts its greatest elongation at 27.8° over the sampled period, less than a whole sign. That makes the placement almost trivially constrained — your Mercury sign is your Sun sign 50.9 % of the time, the sign before it 23.5 %, the sign after it 25.6 %, and nothing else, ever. Three possibilities out of twelve, and one of them is a coin-flip favourite. The retrograde figure is the other half of the story: on the same sample Mercury's apparent longitude is decreasing on 19.2 % of days, which is why the phrase turns up three or four times a year and lasts about three weeks each time. Nothing about Mercury reverses; Earth simply overtakes it on the inside of the track, and the planet appears to slide backwards against the stars for the length of the pass.

Why the phrase comes round so often
Mercury laps the Sun in about 88 days and Earth in 365, so the two line up roughly every 116 days — three or four times a year, each time producing about three weeks of apparent backward motion. That cadence is why Mercury retrograde is the one astronomical term most people can name, and why 19.2 % of all days fall inside one. A quantity that describes nearly a fifth of the calendar is a poor candidate for explaining an unusual week.
What the placement is held to mean
The tradition assigns Mercury to how a person takes in and gives out information — the turn of mind behind speech, writing and learning. Because the placement is so tightly bound to the Sun, a reading of it is close to a refinement of the Sun sign rather than an independent statement, and half the time it is not even a refinement: it is the same sign again. That is worth saying plainly, because it is the honest reason this placement adds less to a chart than Mars does.

- Nothing measurable, and the arithmetic is against the idea before any study is: 19.2 % of all days are inside one, so about a fifth of every kind of event — good, bad and unremarkable — happens during a retrograde by construction. A pattern that holds for a fifth of everything is not a pattern. The interesting thing is why the term became famous, which is that it happens often enough to be memorable and has a vivid name.
- Can Mercury be two signs from my Sun?
- No. A gap of two signs would need an elongation above 30°, and 27.8° is the ceiling over the period measured — the true long-term maximum is around 28°, set by the eccentricity of Mercury's orbit. If a chart shows Mercury two signs from the Sun, something in the birth data is wrong, most often the year or the time zone.
