A screen resolution is the number of pixels a display shows, written as width by height. 1080p (Full HD) is 1920 x 1080, 1440p (QHD) is 2560 x 1440, and 4K (UHD) is 3840 x 2160. Reading resolution as width by height

A display is a grid of tiny points of light called pixels, and resolution simply counts them. The notation 1920 x 1080 means the grid is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall. The shorthand names attach to the vertical number: 1080p refers to the 1080 rows, 1440p to 1440 rows, and so on. The letter p stands for progressive, meaning every line is drawn in each frame, as opposed to the older interlaced scanning marked with an i.

The 4K name breaks the pattern by referring to the horizontal count instead. Consumer 4K, also called UHD, is 3840 x 2160, and the 4K label comes from the roughly four thousand pixels across the width. Cinema 4K used in film production is slightly wider at 4096 pixels. Either way, remember that the two numbers always describe the same thing: how many columns and how many rows of pixels the panel physically contains.

Total pixels grow with the square

Multiply the two numbers and you get the total pixel count, which is what really drives the workload. 1920 x 1080 is about 2.1 million pixels, 2560 x 1440 is about 3.7 million, and 3840 x 2160 is about 8.3 million. The jump from 1080p to 4K is not double but roughly four times, because doubling both the width and the height multiplies the area by two times two. This squared growth is why 4K feels so much more demanding than its name suggests.

That fourfold jump ripples through everything downstream. A 4K frame needs about four times the data of a 1080p frame to look equally sharp, so it wants a much higher bitrate and a larger file. Rendering and gaming push four times as many pixels each frame, demanding more from the graphics processor. Understanding that resolution scales with area, not just the single number in the name, is the key to predicting storage, bandwidth, and performance.

Aspect ratio ties width to height

Aspect ratio is the shape of the screen, the proportion of its width to its height. All three of 1080p, 1440p, and 4K share the 16:9 ratio, which means for every 16 units of width there are 9 units of height. That shared shape is why content scales cleanly between them without black bars or stretching: they are the same rectangle at different pixel densities. You can check a ratio by dividing width by height; 1920 divided by 1080 is about 1.78, the decimal form of 16:9.

Not every screen is 16:9. Ultrawide monitors use 21:9 for a wider field of view, phones stretch to tall ratios like 19.5:9, and cinema often uses 2.39:1. When aspect ratios differ, matching content to the screen requires either letterboxing, adding bars to preserve the shape, or cropping, cutting off the edges. Knowing the aspect ratio of both your content and your display tells you in advance whether they fit or whether something has to give.

Why is 4K four times 1080p and not two times?
Because 4K doubles both dimensions at once. It has twice the width (3840 vs 1920) and twice the height (2160 vs 1080). Since total pixels is width times height, doubling both multiplies the total by two times two, which is four.
What does the p in 1080p mean?
