Speed, Distance and Time: The Formula and How to Rearrange It

The core formula is speed = distance / time. Rearrange it two ways: distance = speed × time, and time = distance / speed. The only trap is units: if speed is in miles per hour, distance must be in miles and time in hours. For example, 150 miles at 50 mph takes 150 / 50 = 3 hours. Keep the three units in the same family and the arithmetic is simple division and multiplication.

The triangle that holds all three formulas
Picture a triangle with distance on top and speed and time in the two bottom corners. Cover the quantity you want, and the triangle shows the formula. Cover distance and you see speed next to time, meaning distance = speed × time. Cover time and you see distance over speed, meaning time = distance / speed. It is a memory aid, not new maths — every version comes from the single relationship speed = distance / time.
Because all three come from one equation, checking your answer is easy: plug the result back in. If you found a time of 3 hours for 150 miles, multiply 50 mph × 3 h and you should get 150 miles back. If the round trip does not close, you have a unit slip or an arithmetic error somewhere.
Units are where mistakes hide
The formula does not care what units you use, but it demands they match. Speed in miles per hour needs distance in miles and time in hours. Mix miles with minutes and the number will be off by a factor of 60. The commonest fix is converting minutes to hours: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, 20 minutes is one third of an hour.
When you do want to change unit families, convert once, cleanly, at the start. A calculator that lets you pick the unit for each field removes this step entirely, but if you are working by hand, write the conversion down rather than doing it in your head mid-problem.
Average speed is not instantaneous speed
The formula gives average speed over the whole trip, not the reading on your speedometer at any moment. A 150-mile drive done in 3 hours averages 50 mph even if you sat at 70 mph on the highway and crawled through town. That is why the formula is useful for planning but cannot tell you whether you ever broke the speed limit.
For real trips, average speed is always lower than your cruising speed because of stops, junctions and slow sections. Planners often use a realistic average — say 55 mph door to door for a highway trip rather than the 70 mph limit — which is exactly what a road-trip calculator lets you set.

- How do I convert minutes into hours for the formula?
- Divide the minutes by 60. So 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, and 90 minutes is 1.5 hours. Always convert before you divide, because the formula expects time in hours when speed is per hour.
- Why is my answer off by a factor of 60?
- That is the classic sign of mixing hours and minutes. If speed is per hour but you left time in minutes, the answer is 60 times too big or too small. Convert the time to hours first and the factor disappears.
- Does the formula give average or top speed?
- Average. Dividing total distance by total time gives the average over the whole journey. Your actual speed will have been higher on open stretches and lower at stops and junctions, but they all fold into one average figure.
- Can I use the same formula for running or cycling?
- Yes. Speed, distance and time work for any motion. Runners often flip it to pace, which is time per unit distance (minutes per mile) rather than distance per unit time, but it is the same relationship rearranged.
