Lean body mass (LBM) is your total body weight minus your fat mass — it includes muscle, bone, organs, water and connective tissue. If a man weighs 176 lb (80 kg) with 18% body fat, his fat mass is about 32 lb (14.4 kg) and his LBM is about 144 lb (65.6 kg). A common estimate is the Boer formula, which predicts LBM from your height, weight and sex. LBM matters because muscle drives your metabolism, strength and long-term health.

Lean mass vs fat mass

Your body weight splits into two broad parts: fat mass and everything else, called lean body mass. Lean mass is not just muscle — it includes bones, organs, blood, water and skin. Because these tissues do most of the body's metabolic work, two people at the same weight can look and perform very differently depending on how much of that weight is lean.

Worked example: a man weighs 176 lb (80 kg) and a body-fat scan reads 18%. Fat mass = 176 × 0.18 = 32 lb (14.4 kg). Lean body mass = 176 − 32 = 144 lb (65.6 kg). Tracking lean mass alongside weight tells you whether a diet is trimming fat or costing you muscle.

The Boer formula

When you don't have a body-fat measurement, the Boer formula estimates LBM from height and weight. For men: LBM = (0.407 × weight in kg) + (0.267 × height in cm) − 19.2. For women: LBM = (0.252 × weight in kg) + (0.473 × height in cm) − 48.3. Our calculator accepts pounds and inches and converts for you.

For the 176 lb (80 kg), 5 ft 11 in (180 cm) man: LBM = (0.407 × 80) + (0.267 × 180) − 19.2 = 32.6 + 48.1 − 19.2 = 61.5 kg, about 136 lb. Like all population formulas, this is an estimate — a body scan (DEXA) or skinfold test is more precise for an individual, but the formula is a handy no-equipment starting point.

Why lean mass matters

Muscle within your lean mass burns energy around the clock, so more of it lifts your metabolism, supports strength and balance, and helps manage blood sugar. Keeping lean mass is especially important with age, when the natural loss of muscle — sarcopenia — raises the risk of falls and frailty. Resistance training and adequate protein are the main tools to protect it.

Lean mass is also used clinically: some medication doses and nutrition plans are based on lean weight rather than total weight, because fat tissue is metabolically less active. That is one reason athletes and clinicians care about the lean-to-fat split, not just the number on the scale.

Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass?
No. Muscle is part of lean mass, but lean mass also includes bone, organs, water and connective tissue. Muscle is usually around half of lean body mass.
How do I increase my lean body mass?
Regular resistance training with enough dietary protein is the proven way to build and keep lean mass. Adequate sleep and not being in too large a calorie deficit also help.
Do women naturally have less lean mass?
On average women carry a higher share of body fat and somewhat less lean mass than men of the same size, which is why the Boer formula uses different coefficients for each sex.
Is a higher lean mass always better?
