What Is a Good Body Fat Percentage?
Published 9/12/2025 · 2 min read · Health calculators
Body fat percentage is the share of your weight that is fat. Healthy ranges depend on sex: roughly 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women counts as fit-to-average, with athletes lower and 'obese' above about 25% (men) or 32% (women). It's a better health signal than weight alone, but it's only an estimate and one of several measures.
Body fat percentage is a better health signal than weight alone. Here are the healthy ranges by sex, how it's measured, and how to use it wisely.
What body fat percentage is
Your body is roughly fat plus everything else — muscle, bone, water and organs, together called lean mass. Body fat percentage is simply what share of your total weight is fat. Because two people at the same weight can carry very different amounts of muscle and fat, this number often tells you more about health and fitness than the scale does.
Healthy ranges by sex
Women naturally carry more essential fat than men, for hormonal and reproductive reasons, so healthy ranges differ. Broadly, a fit range is about 14–17% for men and 21–24% for women, with average a little higher and athletes lower. Very low levels are not the goal — below the essential minimum, roughly 3% in men and 12% in women, is dangerous.
How it's measured
Every method is an estimate with its own error. Tape-measure formulas like the US Navy use body measurements; skinfold calipers pinch fat at set points; bioimpedance scales send a tiny current through you; and lab methods like DEXA are the most accurate but least accessible. Whatever you use, keep to the same method and conditions so your readings are comparable over time.
Using it wisely
Follow the trend, not a single reading — a scale that swings a few points with hydration says little on any one day. Pair body fat with other signals like waist measurement, strength, energy and how your clothes fit, and set realistic goals for your age and sex. For anything health-related, a professional can put the number in proper context.

- What's a healthy body fat percentage?
- Roughly 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women, though it varies with age, fitness and goals.
- Is lower body fat always better?
- No. Below the essential minimum — about 3% in men and 12% in women — is dangerous; some fat is vital for health.
- How accurate are body fat scales?
- Bioimpedance scales only estimate, and readings can swing with hydration and food — follow the trend rather than the exact number.
