In short

There's no single 'ideal weight' — it's a healthy range, not one number. Most formulas (like Devine, or a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9) put the range for a 1.70 m adult at roughly 53–72 kg. Your frame, muscle and sex shift it. Treat any single figure as a rough target, and judge health by more than the scale.

There's no single ideal weight — it's a healthy range. Here's what the common formulas say, what they miss, and better ways to judge a healthy weight.

Why 'ideal weight' is a range

Health doesn't sit at a single point on the scale — it spans a band. Two people of the same height can both be perfectly healthy several kilos apart, because bones, muscle and build differ. That is why doctors talk about a healthy weight range rather than one target. Chasing an exact number can do more harm than good; landing anywhere in the healthy band is the real goal.

The common formulas

Several formulas estimate a target from height and sex — Devine, Robinson and Miller are the best known, and a healthy BMI band (18.5–24.9) does much the same job. For a 1.70 m adult, a healthy BMI puts the range near 53–72 kg, and the older formulas land somewhere inside it. They were built for quick clinical estimates, such as drug dosing, not for judging any one person's health, so read them as a ballpark, not a verdict.

What they miss

These formulas know only your height and sex, so they miss almost everything that makes bodies different. Muscle is denser than fat, so a fit, muscular person can weigh well above the 'ideal' yet carry little fat and be very healthy — many athletes count as overweight by BMI. Frame size, age and where you store fat all matter too. A number that ignores all of this can't tell a strong body from an unhealthy one.

Better ways to judge

Rather than fix on one figure, look at several signals together. Your waist measurement flags harmful fat around the organs better than weight alone. Body-composition tools separate fat from muscle. And the direction of travel — whether your weight and habits are trending healthier over months — usually matters more than today's reading. How you feel, sleep, move and your blood results complete the picture the scale can't show.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal weight for my height?
For 1.70 m, a healthy BMI puts it around 53–72 kg; use your frame and muscle to place yourself within the band.
Is BMI a good measure of ideal weight?
It's a useful population screen but poor for individuals with lots of muscle; pair it with waist and body-fat measures.
Should I aim for one exact number?
No — aim for a healthy range and steady habits rather than a single figure on the scale.
