Every bra size in the world comes from the same two measurements — the ribcage just under the bust, and the fullest part of the bust — and then four markets do completely different arithmetic on them. Take a body measuring 29.5 inches under the bust and 36.25 inches at the fullest point. In the UK, the method Triumph publishes is to round the underbust to the nearest even number, giving a band of 30, and then read the cup off the difference in inches: 36.25 minus 30 is 6.25, and 6 inches on the UK ladder — A, B, C, D, DD, E — is an E. So 30E. In the US the band is derived the same way, but the ladder above D runs DD, DDD, so the same body is a 30DDD. Germany and the metric EU work in centimetres: the same body is 75 cm under the bust and 92 cm at the bust, the band is the underbust rounded to the nearest 5, and the cup comes off the 17 cm difference in 2 cm steps — a 75C. France and Spain use the identical cup ladder but add 15 to the band number, making it a 90C. Italy numbers the bands instead: a 3C. Five labels, one body, and no letter that means the same thing in two of them.

The band and the cup are computed differently in the UK, the US, the metric EU, the French and Spanish markets and Italy. One body, its four labels, and the arithmetic behind each.

Two measurements, and what each one is actually for

Take the tape twice. First around the ribcage directly under the bust, level all the way round, snug — firm enough that it does not slide down, not so tight that it bites. Exhale as you read it. Second around the fullest part of the bust, standing upright, tape taut but not compressing. That is the whole input. Everything else on a bra label is arithmetic performed on those two numbers.

The two do different jobs. The underbust becomes the band, and the band is the structural part: in a well-fitting bra it carries the large majority of the support, which is why a band that rides up at the back is a fit failure rather than a cosmetic complaint. The difference between the two measurements becomes the cup, and the cup is a volume expressed as a letter. That is the sentence to hold on to, because it explains why the same letter changes meaning when the band changes — and why no letter can be compared across systems without also naming the band.

The UK and US band: one number, two incompatible recipes

Here is the fault line almost every article on this subject walks straight past. There are two live methods for turning an underbust measurement into a UK or US band number, and they disagree by two band sizes. The method the shops publish now is the plain one: measure the ribcage in inches, round to the nearest even number, use that. Triumph's UK fitting guide says exactly this — read the tape and round up or down to the nearest multiple of two. Nordstrom says the same for the US, with the explicit instruction to round to the nearest whole number and add nothing.

The other method is the one the whole apparatus of conversion charts is still built on: add four inches to an even underbust measurement, five to an odd one. That is why a chart will confidently pair a UK or US 32 with an EU 70, even though 32 inches is 81 cm and 70 cm is 27.5 inches. The chart is not being sloppy; it is encoding a recipe in which the band number was never meant to equal the ribcage. The method acquired an organised opposition around 2011 — a campaign known as the war on plus four — and large retailers have moved: Kohl's, for one, switched to the plain measurement in 2018.

The consequence is arithmetic, and it is brutal. Our body measures 29.5 inches under the bust and 36.25 inches at the fullest point. Under the plain method the band is 30 and the difference is 6.25 inches, which is a UK E. Under the plus-four recipe the band is 34 and the difference collapses to 2.25 inches, which is a B. Same ribcage, same bust, four cup letters apart and two band sizes apart. If you have ever been fitted twice in two shops and come away with sizes that seemed to describe different people, this is usually why.

Above D the alphabets part company

Up to D, everyone agrees: one inch of difference is an A, two a B, three a C, four a D. Both the UK and the US then insert DD — that part is common, and the popular claim that the doubled letter is a British peculiarity is simply wrong. The divergence starts at the sixth step. The UK ladder runs D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H, HH, J, JJ, K, inserting a doubled letter every other rung. The US ladder runs D, DD, DDD, and from there brands go their own way — some print DDDD, some jump to G, some relabel with single letters entirely.

The metric systems do none of this. Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy all run the letters straight — A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H — with no doubling at all. So a European E is the fifth cup above the band, while a UK E is the sixth and a US size that reads DDD is also the sixth. Three different labels for the same rung, and one letter, E, that occupies two different rungs depending on which side of the Channel it was printed.

There is a second, quieter incompatibility underneath the letters: the size of the step. A UK or US cup is one inch of difference, which is 2.54 cm. A European cup is 2 cm. The European step is therefore about 27% narrower, so the two ladders drift apart the further up you go even where the letters happen to coincide. This is the reason no conversion chart can be made exact by a fixed offset — the rungs are not the same height, so a single correction cannot align them along their whole length.

The metric markets: the same cup, three different band numbers

The good news about the metric world is that the cup arithmetic is shared. Triumph's German guide sets it out plainly: take the difference between bust and underbust in centimetres and read it in 2 cm steps — 10 to 12 cm is AA, 12 to 14 is A, 14 to 16 is B, 16 to 18 is C, 18 to 20 is D, 20 to 22 is E, 22 to 24 is F, 24 to 26 is G. The boundaries are inclusive at one end and their own guide's worked example resolves an exact 16 cm downward to a B, so treat a difference landing precisely on a boundary as ambiguous and try both.

The band number is where the metric markets split three ways. Germany and the international metric convention take the underbust rounded to the nearest 5 cm: 68 to 72 becomes 70, 73 to 77 becomes 75, 78 to 82 becomes 80. France and Spain use the identical bands but add 15 to the printed number, so the same 73-to-77 band is labelled 90 — the French guides and Hunkemöller's Spanish table give exactly the same rows, 63-67 to 80, 68-72 to 85, 73-77 to 90, 78-82 to 95. Italy numbers them instead: subtract 60 from the underbust in centimetres and divide by 5, so 65 is a 1, 70 a 2, 75 a 3, 80 a 4, often written in Roman numerals.

Two honest caveats, because this is where sizing articles start inventing. First, brands inside a market do not all obey their market's formula: Yamamay, an Italian house, publishes numbered bands running 1 for 70 to 73 cm and 2 for 74 to 77 — a different mapping from the classic one, on the same numbers. Second, the picture inside France and Portugal is genuinely mixed rather than settled. Princesse tam.tam, a French retailer, publishes the 65/70/75/80 numbering rather than the French one; Portuguese guides describe both the Iberian plus-fifteen convention and the international numbering, and both are on the rails in Portuguese shops. Read the brand's own chart, always, and treat the national rule as a default rather than a guarantee.

Sister sizing: why the band and the cup trade off

The cup letter is not a fixed volume. It is a volume relative to the band, because it is computed as a difference from it. Move the band up one step and the same difference produces a smaller letter; move the band down and it produces a larger one. The pairs that come out with the same cup volume are called sister sizes, and knowing them turns a badly fitting bra into a solvable problem instead of a mystery.

For our body, the UK sister ladder is 28F, 30E, 32DD, 34D — every one of those holds the same cup volume, and they differ only in how tight the band is. In the metric systems the same body's ladder is 70D, 75C, 80B. Use it in the direction the symptom points: if the band rides up at the back or you can pull it far off your ribs, go down a band and up a cup. If the band digs in and you cannot fasten it comfortably on the loosest hook, go up a band and down a cup. New bands should fasten on the loosest hook, because elastic only ever gets slacker.

Why the "average size" headlines mean nothing

Every few years a retailer announces that the average size has grown. Read it as a sales figure, because that is what it is. A chain can only report the sizes it sells, and it can only sell the sizes it stocks — so an average computed from its till receipts is bounded by its buying decisions before a single customer walks in. Change the range and the average moves without a single body changing. Add that most of these numbers come from self-reported sizes, which are labels, and you have a statistic about labelling conventions dressed up as a statistic about bodies.

What the clinical literature does support is that mismeasurement is common rather than exotic. Greenbaum and colleagues, in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery in 2003, measured 102 women referred for breast reduction and found every single one of them wearing the wrong size. That is a striking finding and it deserves its caveat: this was a referred surgical population, not the general public, and it cannot be read as a national percentage. What it does establish is that the failure mode is systematic, not a matter of individual carelessness — which is exactly what you would expect of a measurement whose recipe changes at every border and half the shop doors.

How to use this in a shop

Write down your two measurements and carry them, not your size. The measurements are facts about you; the size is a fact about a labelling convention, and it changes when you cross a border or a brand. Compute the label for the system you are actually shopping in — the calculator on this page does each market's own arithmetic rather than converting one into another — and then treat the result as a starting point for the fitting room, not a verdict.

In the fitting room, check the band first, because it does the work: it should be level all the way round, firm enough that two fingers slide under with effort, and fastened on the loosest hook when new. Then check the cup for spillage at the top or gaping at the edge, and move along the sister ladder rather than changing both numbers at once. Two or three sizes tried is normal, not a failure — you are not finding your size, you are finding this brand's label for your body.

Frequently asked questions

Which is right — 30E or 34B?
Both are the output of a published method, applied to the same body. The 30E comes from the method UK and US retailers publish today — measure the ribcage, round, add nothing. The 34B comes from the older plus-four recipe that most cross-market conversion charts still encode. The one that matters is the one the brand in front of you used to grade its garments, which is why the brand's own chart beats any general rule. In practice, if a bra with a very loose band and a small cup has never felt supported, the plain-measurement size is the one worth trying.
Is a DD bigger than an E?
It depends entirely on where the label was printed. On the UK ladder DD sits one rung below E, so a UK E is larger. On the metric ladder used in Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy there is no DD at all — the letters run straight, and E is simply the fifth cup. On the US ladder DD is followed by DDD, and an E, where a brand prints one, usually means the same rung as DD. The letter alone carries no information without the system and the band beside it.
Should I measure with a bra on or off?
The underbust is best taken directly against the skin, since anything under the tape adds circumference. For the bust, guides differ: some ask for an unpadded, non-minimising bra so the tissue is in its normal position, others ask for none at all. What matters more than the choice is consistency — take both measurements the same way each time, note which way you used, and remember that a padded or minimiser bra will shift the difference by enough to change the letter.
Why does the same brand fit differently in two countries?
Usually it does not — the garment is the same and only the label changed, because the brand's national site has run your measurements through that market's own recipe. That is why a size that fits in one country can look absurd in another's numbering while fitting identically. The check is to ignore the label and compare the underbust and difference each site's chart is actually mapping to it. Where the fit genuinely differs, it is a grading decision inside the brand, not a national standard.
My size seems to change every few months. Is that normal?
Yes. Both measurements move with weight change, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and the band of an existing bra loosens as its elastic ages, which changes how it feels long before your body has changed at all. Re-measure when a bra stops feeling right rather than on a schedule, and use the loosest-hook rule as the early warning. What is not normal, and is worth a doctor's appointment rather than a new bra, is a change in the shape or skin of one breast, a new lump, or pain that stays put.
