Cast-on stitches = (finished width in cm ÷ 10) × your gauge in stitches per 10 cm. For a 50 cm wide piece at a gauge of 22 stitches per 10 cm, that is 110 stitches; rows work the same way, so 60 cm at 30 rows per 10 cm is 180 rows. The number in the pattern was computed from the designer's gauge, and gauge is a property of the knitter as much as of the yarn and needle. If your swatch gives 20 stitches per 10 cm and you cast on the pattern's 110 anyway, the piece comes out 55 cm wide — ten per cent too big, from a two-stitch difference nobody would notice in a swatch.

Two stitches per 10 cm is the difference between a 50 cm scarf and a 55 cm one. The pattern's cast-on number is only correct for the person who wrote it.

Gauge belongs to the knitter, not to the yarn

A ball band recommends a needle and a gauge, and that recommendation is an average over a great many hands. How tightly you hold the working yarn, whether you throw or pick, how much tension the fabric takes on a circular needle rather than straights — all of it moves the number, and none of it is in the pattern. Two knitters with identical yarn and identical needles routinely differ by two or three stitches over ten centimetres.

The consequence scales with the piece. Two stitches per ten centimetres is invisible on a swatch and worth five centimetres on a fifty-centimetre width — but on a jumper body of a hundred centimetres round it is ten centimetres of circumference, which is a whole size. This is why patterns insist on the swatch and why the insistence is so often ignored: the error is proportional to the finished object and therefore absent from the small square where you would notice it.

Rows are the half everybody forgets

A swatch has two numbers and most knitters measure one. Row gauge governs length, and length is where a garment goes wrong invisibly: a sleeve knitted to a row count rather than to a measurement comes out short or long by exactly the ratio of the two row gauges. The calculator asks for both because both are needed, and because a pattern that gives shaping over a number of rows has assumed a row gauge you may not share.

The practical rule that follows is to knit shaping to a measurement wherever the pattern lets you, and to convert to rows only when the shaping has to land on a specific row of a stitch repeat. Where a pattern says to decrease every sixth row for thirty rows, what it means is to decrease five times over ten centimetres — do the second version and the garment fits whoever knitted it.

When to change needle, and when to change the number

There are two ways to reconcile your gauge with a pattern and they are not equivalent. Changing needle size moves your gauge towards the designer's, which keeps every number in the pattern usable — go up a size if you have too many stitches per ten centimetres and down if you have too few. Changing the numbers keeps your needle and recomputes the cast-on, which is what the calculator does. The first preserves the fabric the designer intended; the second preserves the fabric you like.

Prefer the needle when the pattern's construction depends on its numbers — a colourwork chart, a lace repeat, a sleeve set into a computed armhole. Prefer recomputing when the piece is a rectangle or when the yarn only behaves at one needle size, which is common with cotton and linen. A scarf, a blanket, a plain-fronted cardigan: recompute and knit with the needle that gives you the fabric you want.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a swatch be?
At least 15 cm square, so you can measure 10 cm well inside the edges. Anything smaller and the curled selvedges eat the measuring zone, which biases the count upwards and produces a garment that comes out too big — the error runs in the direction that costs yarn and disappointment.
Does the gauge change after washing?
Often, and sometimes a lot. Superwash wool and cotton relax and grow when wet; untreated wool blooms and tightens slightly; linen softens and lengthens over several washes. A gauge measured before blocking describes a fabric that will not exist once the garment has been worn and washed, which is why the swatch has to go through the same treatment first.
The pattern gives gauge over 4 inches, not 10 cm. Does it matter?
Slightly, and in the direction nobody expects. Four inches is 10.16 cm, so a gauge quoted over four inches is 1.6 per cent looser than the same number quoted over ten centimetres. On a 50 cm width that is eight millimetres — usually below the noise, but worth knowing if you are already at the edge of a size. Enter your own count over exactly ten centimetres and the discrepancy disappears.
