The Aida Count Sets the Size, Not the Chart

A cross-stitch chart has no size. It has a stitch count, and the finished dimensions come from dividing that count by the fabric count — the number of stitches the fabric fits per inch. A 100 × 120 chart works out at 23.1 × 27.7 cm on 11-count Aida, 18.1 × 21.8 cm on 14-count, 15.9 × 19.1 cm on 16-count, 14.1 × 16.9 cm on 18-count and 11.5 × 13.9 cm on 22-count. Halving the count doubles every dimension and quadruples the area, so the fabric decides the size of the finished piece and the chart decides only what is on it.

The same 100 × 120 chart finishes 23 cm wide on 11-count and 11.5 cm wide on 22-count — twice the width, four times the area, from one number on the fabric label.

Why the count is a number of stitches and not a thread size

Aida is woven in blocks, and the count is how many of those blocks fit into an inch. Fourteen-count fits fourteen stitches per inch; twenty-two-count fits twenty-two into the same inch, which makes each stitch smaller. The number therefore behaves like a divisor and not like a size: a bigger count is a smaller stitch and a smaller finished piece, which is the opposite of what the word suggests to anyone reading it for the first time.

The count is also the reason a chart cannot carry its own dimensions. A designer publishes a grid; whoever stitches it chooses how large that grid becomes. Two people working the same pattern from the same sheet, one on 11-count and one on 22-count, produce pieces of the same design at twice and half the scale, and both are correct. This is why a pattern that quotes a finished size has quietly assumed a fabric, and why the assumption is worth finding before buying the cloth.

The margin is more than half the fabric you buy

A design needs a border of bare fabric to be framed or finished, and five centimetres a side is the usual minimum. On the 14-count version that turns a 18.1 × 21.8 cm design into a 28.1 × 31.8 cm cut — the margin is 56 per cent of what you carry home. On the 18-count version, where the design is smaller but the margin is not, it reaches 63 per cent. The finer the fabric, the more of your purchase is border.

The calculator prints both figures side by side for that reason: the design size, which is what you will see, and the cut size, which is what you must buy. Confusing them is the commonest reason a piece cannot be framed — the stitching is finished and correct, and there is nothing left to grip in the hoop or to fold behind the mount.

Evenweave, linen, and the count that means half of itself

Aida is counted in blocks and stitched one block per stitch. Evenweave and linen are counted in threads, and the usual practice is to work over two threads, which halves the effective count: a 28-count linen stitched over two behaves exactly like a 14-count Aida, and a 32-count like a 16-count. That is why the table above lists 28 alongside the Aida counts with a note rather than as a separate scale — the arithmetic is the same, and only the label changes.

The trap is a pattern that names a count without saying which fabric it means. Twenty-eight on Aida and twenty-eight on linen over two threads differ by a factor of two in every dimension, which is the largest single mistake available in this craft and the easiest to make. When a pattern is ambiguous, the finished size it quotes is the tie-breaker: run it back through the count and see which reading gives that answer.

Frequently asked questions

What size fabric do I need for a 200 × 250 chart?
On 14-count, 200 ÷ 14 = 14.3 inches and 250 ÷ 14 = 17.9, so 36.3 × 45.4 cm finished and 46.3 × 55.4 cm cut with a 5 cm margin. On 16-count it drops to 31.8 × 39.7 cm finished. Which count should a beginner choose?
Fourteen-count Aida, and not because it is easiest to see — although it is. It is the count nearly every published chart quietly assumes, so a pattern that names a finished size without naming a fabric is almost always describing 14-count. Starting there means the size on the packet and the size in your hoop agree, which removes one variable while you learn the stitch.
Can I make a chart bigger without redrawing it?
Yes — move to a lower count. Going from 14 to 11 makes everything 27 per cent larger without changing a single square of the chart, and going from 18 to 11 makes it 64 per cent larger. The catch is that a coarser fabric shows its weave, so a design with fine shading loses definition as it grows. Enlarging by stitching each square over two blocks instead of one is the other route, and it doubles the size exactly.
