How a Golf Handicap Is Actually Calculated Under the World Handicap System

Every round becomes a Score Differential: (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (adjusted gross score − Course Rating), rounded to one decimal. A gross 92 on a course rated 71.2 with a Slope of 128 gives (113 ÷ 128) × (92 − 71.2) = 18.4. Your Handicap Index is the average of the lowest 8 of your most recent 20 differentials, rounded to the nearest tenth — nothing else. There is no 0.96 multiplier: the old bonus for excellence was removed when the World Handicap System came in on 1 January 2020. If your best eight are 11.9, 12.6, 13.4, 14.0, 14.5, 15.1, 15.8 and 16.3, they sum to 113.6 and your Index is 14.2. That Index is not what you play off. On the day, Course Handicap = Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par), so 14.2 on a Slope 132 course rated 72.4 to a par of 72 gives 14.2 × 1.168 + 0.4 = 16.99, which rounds to 17 strokes.

Best 8 of your last 20 score differentials, averaged, and no 0.96 multiplier — that disappeared in 2020. Here is the full chain from a gross 92 to a Course Handicap of 17, with the numbers worked out.

The differential is what actually gets stored

Your scoring record does not contain scores. It contains differentials, because a 92 means nothing on its own — it depends entirely on which course produced it. The Course Rating strips out the difficulty for a scratch player by subtraction, and the Slope Rating strips out how much harder the course gets for everybody else by division. The 113 in the numerator is simply the Slope of a course of average difficulty, so dividing by 128 and multiplying by 113 asks: what would this round have been worth on an ordinary course?

The consequence is worth internalising: the same gross score is not worth the same everywhere. A 92 on Course Rating 71.2 and Slope 128 is a differential of 18.4; the same 92 on an easier layout rated 70.1 with a Slope of 118 is 25.8 — more than seven strokes worse in handicap terms, for an identical card. This is also why the adjustment in step one comes first. A blow-up hole capped at net double bogey keeps one disastrous par-5 from distorting a round that was otherwise representative, which is exactly what the differential is trying to measure.

Best 8 of 20, and no bonus for excellence

This is where most published explanations are still describing a system that no longer runs. The pre-2020 USGA formula averaged the best 10 of the last 20 differentials, multiplied the result by 0.96 — the bonus for excellence — and truncated to a tenth. The World Handicap System averages the best 8 of the last 20, applies no multiplier at all, and rounds rather than truncates. If a calculator or an article shows you a 0.96 anywhere, it is out of date by more than six years.

On a steady record the two formulas land almost on top of each other, which is roughly by design: taking eight differentials instead of ten already discards the weaker rounds that the 0.96 used to shave off. Our sample record averages 14.2 under WHS; under the old formula the best 10 average 14.79, times 0.96 is 14.198, truncated to 14.1 — one tenth apart. On an erratic record the two diverge sharply. A player with eight rounds in the low teens and a dozen in the twenties comes out at 11.1 under WHS and 12.6 under the old system: a full stroke and a half, because WHS rewards demonstrated potential far more aggressively than an average of ten ever did.

Your Index is not the number you play off

The Handicap Index is portable: it belongs to you and travels between clubs and countries. The Course Handicap belongs to a tee on a course on a given day, and the conversion has two parts. The Slope term scales your Index to how much harder this layout plays for a bogey golfer than a standard one; the Course Rating minus Par term accounts for the fact that a par of 72 can sit on a course rated 74.8 or 69.5. That second term is the one people forget, and it was added when the World Handicap System came in.

The size of the effect surprises people. The same Index of 14.2 becomes 21 strokes from a Slope 145 tee rated 74.8 to par 72, and only 12 from a short Slope 113 tee rated 69.5 to the same par — nine strokes of spread from one number. Then the competition applies its own allowance on top: 95 percent in individual stroke play turns a Course Handicap of 17 into a Playing Handicap of 16. Three different numbers, three different jobs, and only the first one is yours to carry around.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 20 rounds before I have a Handicap Index?
No — three 18-hole scores are enough to be issued one. Below 20 rounds, Table 5.2a of the Rules of Handicapping says how many differentials to use and whether to apply an adjustment: with 3 scores you take the lowest 1 and subtract 2.0, with 4 the lowest 1 minus 1.0, with 5 the lowest 1 with no adjustment, with 6 the lowest 2 minus 1.0, then the lowest 2 for 7 to 8 scores, 3 for 9 to 11, 4 for 12 to 14, 5 for 15 to 16, 6 for 17 to 18, 7 for 19, and finally 8 once you reach 20.
Why did one great round barely move my Index?
Because it is an average of eight. A new score can only ever displace one of the counting differentials, so its effect on the Index is the improvement divided by eight: beat the worst of your counting eight by four strokes and your Index drops by 0.5, not by four. The flip side is that a single disaster cannot wreck you either — a differential worse than your eighth best simply does not count at all until better ones age out of the most recent 20.
Can a Handicap Index be negative?
Yes, and it is written with a plus sign rather than a minus, which confuses almost everyone the first time. A scratch player is 0.0; a player who regularly beats the Course Rating carries a plus handicap, shown as +2.4, and gives strokes back to the field instead of receiving them. At the other end the Index is capped at 54.0, a limit raised deliberately when the World Handicap System came in so that beginners and high scorers could hold a real Index rather than none at all.
