Plan on about 3 slices per adult guest, then divide by the slices per pizza to get the number of pies. A large 14-inch pizza cuts into 8 slices, so it feeds about 3 people; a 12-inch medium gives 6 slices for about 2 people. Quick formula: pizzas = (guests × 3) ÷ 8. For 10 guests that is (10 × 3) ÷ 8 = 3.75, so order 4 large pizzas.

Work out how many pizzas to order for a party: slices per guest, slices per pizza, and the simple formula that ties them together.
Start with slices per guest
The planning number most caterers use is 3 slices per adult. That covers a typical appetite when pizza is the main event; drop to 2 slices if there are sides, salads or appetizers, and go up to 4 for big eaters or a late-night crowd with nothing else on the table.
Children usually eat about 2 slices, sometimes less for little ones. When your guest list mixes adults and kids, count each child as roughly two-thirds of an adult so you do not massively over-order. A quick way: total slices = (adults × 3) + (children × 2).
Slices per pizza by size
Slice count depends on pizza size. A small 10-inch pizza is usually cut into 6 slices, a medium 12-inch into 8, a large 14-inch into 8 to 10, and an extra-large 16-inch or 18-inch into 10 to 12. Because bigger pies have more area per slice, a large 14-inch generally feeds about 3 people and a medium about 2.
When ordering, prefer fewer large pizzas over many small ones: large pies give more food per dollar and fewer boxes to juggle. Mix two or three toppings across the order so there is something for everyone, and always include at least one plain cheese for kids and picky eaters.
Putting the formula to work
The whole calculation is: pizzas needed = (guests × slices per guest) ÷ slices per pizza, rounded up. Say 15 adults at 3 slices each on large 8-slice pies: (15 × 3) ÷ 8 = 5.6, so order 6 large pizzas. Rounding up is the golden rule — leftover pizza is welcome; running short is not.
Two final tweaks. If your event runs long or spans a mealtime, add one extra pizza per 10 guests for second helpings. And check the crust style: thin-crust slices disappear faster than filling deep-dish, so lean toward the higher slice-per-guest number when you serve a light, crispy pizza.

Run it on your own figures →Frequently asked questions
- How many slices does a large pizza have?
- A large 14-inch pizza is usually cut into 8 slices, sometimes up to 10. That typically feeds about 3 adults at 3 slices each.
- How many pizzas do I need for 20 people?
- For 20 adults at 3 slices each: (20 × 3) ÷ 8 = 7.5, so order 8 large pizzas. Add one more if the party runs long or pizza is the only food.
- How many slices should I plan per person?
- About 3 slices per adult and 2 per child. Lower it to 2 for adults if you are also serving salads, sides or appetizers.
- Is it better to order more large or more small pizzas?
- Fewer large pizzas usually win: they give more food per dollar and are easier to manage than many small ones. Keep at least two toppings, including a plain cheese for picky eaters.
