How Many Steps to Burn Calories?
Published 8/11/2025 · 2 min read · Sport calculators
As a rough guide, walking burns about 0.04 calories per step for an average adult, so roughly 2,000–2,500 steps burn about 100 calories, and the popular 10,000 steps burn around 400–500. The exact number depends on your weight, pace and terrain — heavier, faster and uphill all burn more. Distance and body weight matter most.

Walking burns roughly 0.04 calories a step. Here's what 10,000 steps really burns, what changes the number, and whether 10,000 is a magic figure.
The rough number
A handy rule of thumb is that walking burns roughly 0.04 calories per step for an average adult. That puts about 100 calories at 2,000 to 2,500 steps, and the famous 10,000-step target at somewhere around 400 to 500 calories. These are ballpark figures, useful for planning, not precise readings — your own body and how you walk shift them.
What changes it
Body weight is the biggest factor: moving a heavier body costs more energy, so a 90 kg walker burns noticeably more per step than a 60 kg one. Pace adds to it — a brisk walk burns more per step than a stroll — and hills more still, since lifting yourself uphill is hard work. Stride length plays in too, which is why raw step counts are only ever approximate.
Steps vs distance
Under the hood, calories track distance and weight more closely than steps alone. A typical adult takes roughly 1,300 to 1,500 steps per kilometre, so 10,000 steps is about 7 to 8 km. If you know your distance and weight, the walking burn is close to your weight in kilograms times about half a calorie per kilometre — a useful cross-check on any step-based estimate.
Is 10,000 steps a magic number?
Not really. The 10,000-step goal began as a marketing slogan for a pedometer, not as a scientific threshold. Research suggests real health benefits appear well below it — often in the range of 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for many adults — and that more movement is generally better up to a point. Treat 10,000 as a handy, round target, not a line you must cross.
