In short

To convert steps to distance, multiply your number of steps by your average stride length. A common estimate for stride is about 2.2 ft for women and 2.5 ft for men, so 10,000 steps is roughly 4 to 5 miles. For an accurate figure, measure your own stride by walking a known distance and dividing by the steps it took.

To turn a step count into distance, multiply your steps by your stride length. Learn how to estimate your stride and convert steps into miles.

The basic formula

Distance equals steps multiplied by stride length. Stride length is how far you travel with one step, measured from where one heel lifts to where it lands again. Multiply your step count by that length and you get total distance in the same unit as your stride.

For example, at a stride of 2.4 ft, 5,000 steps covers about 12,000 ft, or roughly 2.3 miles. The single biggest source of error is guessing your stride, so measuring it once makes every future step count far more accurate.

Estimating your stride length

A quick estimate uses height: stride length is often close to 0.41 to 0.45 times your height. For a 5 ft 9 in person, that gives a stride of roughly 2.4 to 2.6 ft. This is a starting point, since walking speed and terrain change your real stride.

For a better figure, walk a measured distance and count your steps. Divide the distance by the number of steps to get your true stride. Running usually lengthens your stride, so measure separately if you want an accurate running distance.

Turning distance into daily goals

Once you know your stride, any step target converts to distance. The often-cited 10,000-step goal is a general activity marker, not a strict medical threshold, and research suggests meaningful health benefits at lower counts too. Choose a target you can keep up consistently.

Trackers and phones estimate distance the same way but rely on generic stride assumptions, so entering your measured stride makes them more accurate. Treat the total as a helpful estimate for motivation rather than a precise medical measurement.

Frequently asked questions

How far is 10,000 steps?
For most adults, 10,000 steps is roughly 4 to 5 miles, depending on stride length. Taller people and faster walkers cover more ground per step, so your exact distance depends on your measured stride.
Is stride length the same as step length?
In everyday use they are often treated as the same, but strictly a step is one foot to the other, while a stride is two steps (the same foot to the same foot again). This calculator uses one figure for the distance covered per step, so measure it the way you count.
Does running distance use the same stride?
No. Running usually lengthens your stride compared with walking, so using a walking stride will underestimate running distance. Measure your stride separately for running if you want an accurate figure.
Why does my phone's distance differ from the calculator?
Phones and trackers often assume a generic stride or blend in GPS and sensor data, so their totals can differ from a simple steps-times-stride estimate. Entering your own measured stride usually brings the numbers closer together.
