Why humidity changes how heat feels

Your body sheds heat mainly by sweating: as sweat evaporates, it carries heat off the skin. That evaporation depends on how much moisture the surrounding air can still absorb. When relative humidity is high, the air is already near saturation, sweat lingers, and cooling stalls.

The heat index folds this into one number. It is calibrated for shade and light wind, so standing in direct sun can add up to 15°F to the value. That is why the same reading can feel very different depending on the sky.

Reading the numbers

As a rough guide, a heat index of 90 to 103°F means caution — heat cramps and exhaustion are possible with prolonged exposure. From 103 to 124°F it is dangerous, and above that heat stroke becomes likely. The bands matter more than the exact figure.

The index climbs steeply with humidity. At 90°F, going from 40% to 70% relative humidity lifts the feels-like value from the low 90s into the low 100s. That is why a muggy afternoon can be far more taxing than a dry one at the same reading.

Using it to stay safe

Treat the heat index as a planning tool, not a formality. On high-index days, shift hard outdoor work to early morning, drink water before you feel thirsty, and take breaks in shade or air conditioning. Older adults, young children and anyone on certain medications are more vulnerable.

Is the heat index the same as the temperature?
No. The thermometer reads the actual air temperature; the heat index adds the effect of humidity to estimate how hot it feels to your body.
At what heat index does it become dangerous?
Caution starts around 90°F, danger around 103°F, and extreme danger above roughly 124°F, where heat stroke becomes likely with continued exposure.
Does direct sun raise the heat index?
Effectively, yes. The published index assumes shade; full sunshine can add up to about 15°F to how hot it actually feels.
Why does the same temperature feel worse some days?
Usually humidity. When the air is damp, sweat evaporates poorly, so your body cools less and the same temperature feels far more oppressive.
