What is the most common mistake?

Reading it as a prediction about you. It is arithmetic on a baseline you supplied, and that baseline is a population average — a number about a cohort, not about a person. Life expectancy at birth is also not life expectancy at your current age: having already reached forty, the expected total is higher than the figure quoted for newborns, because the average at birth carries every death before forty in it.

How accurate is it, and what are the limits?

This is a statistical average, not a personal prediction.

Where do the figures come from, and how current are they?

None, and that is the point: the baseline is yours to supply. The tool does the arithmetic around it and does not ship a table of national life expectancies, because such a table is true of a country in a year and would quietly stop being true here. Take the figure from a statistical office — Eurostat, the WHO, or your own national institute — and prefer their period life expectancy *at your current age* over the headline figure at birth.
