How to Convert kWh to CO₂: Grid Emission Factors Explained

Multiply your electricity use in kWh by your grid's emission factor, expressed in grams of CO₂ per kWh, then divide by 1,000 to get kilograms. For example, 500 kWh × 300 g/kWh ÷ 1,000 = 150 kg of CO₂. The emission factor varies enormously by country and even by hour, so use a local figure rather than a global average.

What a grid emission factor is
A grid emission factor tells you how much carbon dioxide is released, on average, to generate one kilowatt-hour of electricity in a given place. It's usually stated in grams of CO₂ per kWh. The number reflects the mix of sources feeding the grid — coal and gas push it up, while wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear pull it down.
Why the factor varies so much
There is no single correct number to plug in, because the emission factor depends entirely on where and when the electricity was made. A country running mostly on hydro or nuclear may sit well under 100 g CO₂ per kWh, while one leaning on coal can exceed 600 or 700. This is why a global average badly misrepresents any specific home — always look up the figure for your own grid.
The factor also shifts through the day and season. When wind and solar are plentiful, the same kilowatt-hour carries far less carbon than at a still, dark evening peak met by gas plants. Time-of-use carbon data lets you shift flexible loads — laundry, charging, dishwashing — to cleaner hours.

- Where do I find my grid's emission factor?
- National energy or environment agencies publish annual grid factors, and some real-time services show the current figure by the hour. Your electricity provider may also list it.
- Should I use production or consumption factors?
- Consumption-based factors include electricity imported from neighboring grids and are usually more accurate for a household. If only a production figure is available, it's still a reasonable estimate.
- Does the factor include the full life cycle?
- Most quoted factors count only emissions from burning fuel to generate power. Full life-cycle figures, which add building and fuel-supply emissions, are higher — check which basis a source uses.
- How much CO₂ does an average home cause?
- It depends on both usage and the grid. The same 4,000 kWh a year produces very different totals — perhaps under 300 kg on a clean grid but well over 2 tonnes on a coal-heavy one.
