Pace to Speed Conversion: Min/Mile, MPH and the Formulas
Published 5/14/2026 · 4 min read · Sport calculators
Pace and speed are inverses of each other. To turn pace into speed, divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile: a 10:00 min/mile pace is 60 ÷ 10 = 6.0 mph. To go the other way, divide 60 by your speed in mph to get pace in minutes per mile. For treadmills that show mph, this lets you match a target pace instantly. The same 60-divided-by-pace rule works in metric with minutes per kilometer and kilometers per hour.

How to convert between running pace in minutes per mile and speed in miles per hour, with the exact formulas.
Pace and speed are two views of the same thing
Speed answers how far you go per unit of time; pace answers how much time you spend per unit of distance. They describe the identical effort from opposite ends. Runners tend to think in pace — minutes per mile — because it maps directly to how a race feels, while treadmills and cyclists favor speed in miles per hour.
Because they are inverses, one always rises as the other falls. Speed up and your pace number gets smaller; slow down and it grows. That inverse link is why you cannot simply add or average paces the way you can with speeds — a point that trips up many runners doing math on the fly.
The exact conversion formulas
Speed in mph equals 60 divided by pace in minutes per mile. So 7:30 per mile is 7.5 minutes, and 60 ÷ 7.5 = 8.0 mph. Reverse it with pace = 60 ÷ speed: 9.0 mph gives 60 ÷ 9 = 6.667 minutes, which is 6:40 per mile. The decimal 0.667 of a minute becomes seconds by multiplying by 60, giving 40 seconds.
The trap is the seconds. Pace is written in minutes and seconds, not decimals, so 7:30 must become 7.5 minutes before you divide — treating it as 7.30 gives a wrong answer. The converter handles that split for you, and it also switches between miles and kilometers, so you never have to juggle two number systems at once.
Switching between miles and kilometers
One mile is 1.609 kilometers, so the two pace systems are close but not equal. A pace of 8:00 per mile is a bit faster in feel than 5:00 per kilometer, because a mile is longer than a kilometer. To convert a per-mile pace to per-kilometer, divide the seconds by 1.609; to go the other way, multiply by 1.609.
This matters when you follow a training plan or a treadmill built for the other unit. A workout calling for 4:45 per kilometer is nonsense on a machine that only shows mph until you convert it — 4:45 per km is about 12.6 km/h, or 7.85 mph. The converter does all three hops (pace to speed, mile to kilometer, and back) in one place.

- How do I turn pace into speed?
- Divide 60 by your pace expressed in decimal minutes. A pace of 8:00 per mile is 8.0 minutes, so 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph. Remember to convert the seconds part into a decimal first, since 8:30 is 8.5 minutes, not 8.30.
- Why can't I just average two paces?
- Because pace is the inverse of speed, averaging paces overweights the slower segment. To average correctly, convert each to speed, average the speeds over the distances involved, then convert back to pace. The converter avoids this pitfall entirely.
- How do I convert per-mile pace to per-kilometer?
- Divide the per-mile pace in seconds by 1.609, since a mile is 1.609 kilometers. For instance, 8:03 per mile (483 seconds) becomes 483 ÷ 1.609 ≈ 300 seconds, or 5:00 per kilometer.
- Does the treadmill speed match my outdoor pace?
- The number matches, but the effort may not. Treadmills remove wind resistance and offer a flat, cushioned belt, so a given speed can feel easier indoors. Many runners set a 1% incline to bring the effort closer to outdoor running at the same pace.
