Towing Capacity: the Limit That Stops You First

Ask a brochure how much a car can tow and it gives you one number. The law gives you at least four, and you must satisfy every one of them at once: the gross vehicle weight rating, which caps the loaded vehicle alone; the gross combination weight rating, which caps vehicle plus trailer together; the maximum trailer weight; and the maximum tongue weight at the hitch, with the front and rear axle ratings sitting behind all of them. The trap is that tongue weight is payload. It comes out of the same GVWR budget as your passengers and their luggage. Take a vehicle with a 4,500 lb curb weight, a 5,600 lb GVWR, a 10,500 lb GCWR, a 5,000 lb tow rating and a 500 lb tongue limit. Alone, you can tow the full 5,000 lb. Put two adults and 140 lb of luggage aboard and you are on the GCWR line exactly. Put three adults and 150 lb aboard and the payload left for tongue weight is 410 lb, so the biggest trailer you may legally pull is 4,100 lb. Four adults and 150 lb leaves 230 lb, and the answer collapses to 2,300 lb — 46% of the headline rating, with nothing about the vehicle changed except who is sitting in it.

There is no single towing capacity. There are four or five separate limits, and the one that binds is rarely the tow rating on the brochure — it is usually the vehicle's own weight budget, quietly consumed by the people sitting in it.
There is no such thing as one towing capacity
A tow rating is one entry in a list, and the list is what actually governs. The gross vehicle weight rating is the most a loaded vehicle may weigh on its own, driver, passengers, fuel, luggage, roof box and tongue weight included. The gross combination weight rating is the most the vehicle and the trailer may weigh together. The maximum trailer weight is a separate cap on the trailer alone, usually quoted twice — one figure for a braked trailer, a much smaller one for an unbraked trailer. The maximum tongue weight is what the hitch and the vehicle's rear structure may carry vertically. And underneath all of them sit the front and rear axle ratings, which cap the load standing on each axle regardless of whether the vehicle's total is legal.
These are not five ways of saying the same thing, and they do not scale together. A vehicle can be nowhere near its trailer rating and still be illegal because its own loaded mass has passed the gross vehicle weight rating. It can be inside every mass limit and still be illegal because one axle is overloaded. The correct question is never how much can this car tow — it is which of these limits do I run into first, given how I am actually loading it today. That answer changes every time you put a passenger in the car, and it is why two people driving the same model can honestly report different maximum trailers.
Tongue weight is payload, and payload is a budget
Payload is the gross vehicle weight rating minus the curb weight, and it is a single pot that everything draws from. On our example vehicle that is 5,600 − 4,500 = 1,100 lb. A driver at 180 lb leaves 920. Add three more adults at 180 lb each and 150 lb of luggage and you have spent 870, leaving 230 lb. That 230 lb is now the entire allowance for the vertical load the trailer presses down on the hitch. At a conventional 10% tongue weight, 230 lb of allowance buys a 2,300 lb trailer, and no arithmetic anywhere else in the vehicle can rescue you. The tow rating still says 5,000 lb. It is simply unreachable with those people on board.
The relationship has a closed form worth carrying in your head. If tongue weight is a fraction p of the trailer weight, then the gross vehicle weight rating caps the trailer at (GVWR − curb − load aboard) ÷ p, and the gross combination weight rating caps it at (GCWR − curb − load aboard) ÷ (1 + p). You take the smaller of those two, then the smaller of that and the trailer rating, then the smaller of that and the tongue limit divided by p. Four candidates, one winner, and which one wins moves as you load the car. The second formula is the one people forget: because the trailer appears on both sides of the combination limit, every kilogram you add to the vehicle costs you slightly more than a kilogram of trailer.
One vehicle, four load-outs, four different answers
Start with the driver alone at 180 lb. The vehicle weighs 4,680 lb before the trailer touches it; a 5,000 lb trailer at 10% puts 500 lb on the hitch, so the loaded vehicle is 5,180 lb against a 5,600 lb rating and the combination is 10,180 lb against 10,500. Everything passes, and the tongue weight lands exactly on its 500 lb limit — a coincidence worth noticing, because it means the headline rating is achievable only with the hitch at its maximum. Add two adults and 140 lb of luggage and the base rises to 5,000 lb. The combination limit now allows (10,500 − 5,000) ÷ 1.1 = 5,000 lb of trailer, which is exactly the tow rating: the vehicle is on the line, at 10,500 lb, with nothing spare.
Now take three adults and 150 lb of luggage: base 5,190 lb, payload left 410 lb. Here the binding limit changes character. The combination rule would still allow (10,500 − 5,190) ÷ 1.1 = 4,827 lb, but the gross vehicle weight rating only allows 410 ÷ 0.10 = 4,100 lb of trailer before the loaded vehicle itself hits 5,600 lb. The trailer is now limited by the car, not by the combination. Add a fourth adult and the base is 5,370 lb, the payload left is 230 lb, and the same rule gives 2,300 lb. Between the first and the last scenario nothing changed about the vehicle, the hitch or the trailer: 690 lb of people and bags removed 2,700 lb of towing capacity, a ratio of about four to one.
There is one more constraint that does not appear on the vehicle at all: your licence. In the European Union a plain category B licence covers a combination up to 3,500 kg, which every scenario above exceeds. The B96 extension raises that to 4,250 kg, which just covers the 4,200 kg combination in the table, and category BE goes further. Getting the vehicle arithmetic right and then discovering the licence does not cover the combination is a common and expensive mistake, and it is worth checking before you buy either the car or the trailer.
Nose weight: too little is far more dangerous than too much
Nose weight — tongue weight in North American usage — is the vertical force the coupling presses onto the hitch, and it is set entirely by where the load sits inside the trailer relative to the trailer's axle. Load heavy items ahead of the axle and nose weight rises; load them behind it and nose weight falls, and can even go negative, lifting the back of the car. The recommended fraction differs by market and by hitch design: European practice is broadly five to seven per cent of trailer weight, while North American practice for a conventional ball hitch is ten to fifteen per cent. Those are not contradictory — they reflect different coupling designs, different trailer geometries and different regulatory histories — but you must apply the one that matches your equipment.
The asymmetry in the risk is what matters. Too much nose weight overloads the rear axle and lightens the front one, so the vehicle steers and brakes worse — a serious problem, but a gradual and predictable one that a driver notices as vague steering. Too little nose weight is a different category of failure. When the trailer's centre of mass sits behind its axle, a small yaw disturbance — a gust, a lorry passing, a lane change — produces a force that pushes the trailer further out rather than back into line. The oscillation feeds itself, its amplitude grows with each cycle, and above a critical speed it diverges instead of damping. That is trailer sway, and it can go from imperceptible to uncontrollable in a handful of seconds without the driver having done anything wrong.
There is a squeeze here that the numbers expose. Our example vehicle has a 500 lb tongue limit, and 500 lb is exactly 10% of a 5,000 lb trailer — the bottom of the recommended ten to fifteen per cent band. Loading that trailer to a comfortable 15% would put 750 lb on the hitch, half again over the limit. So on a maximum-weight trailer the vehicle's own tongue limit forces you toward the least stable end of the recommended range, and the only remaining tool is where you place the load. That is why loading discipline matters more, not less, as the trailer gets heavier: measure the nose weight with a proper gauge rather than guessing, and move the load forward or back until it reads inside the window.
Where the tongue weight actually lands
Tongue weight does not simply add itself to the vehicle's total and stop there. The hitch sits behind the rear axle, so the load acts on a lever: the rear axle takes more than the tongue weight, and the front axle loses some. If the hitch overhang behind the rear axle is b and the wheelbase is L, then the rear axle gains W × (1 + b ÷ L) and the front axle loses W × b ÷ L. With a 500 lb tongue weight, a 3.5 ft overhang and a 9 ft wheelbase, the rear axle takes 500 × (1 + 3.5 ÷ 9) = 694 lb while the front axle sheds 194 lb. The vehicle's total went up by 500; the rear axle's load went up by nearly 700.
Two consequences follow. The rear axle rating is the limit most often exceeded on a legally loaded combination, because it is the only one the lever multiplies. And the lost load on the front axle is a handling problem in its own right, since less weight on the steered wheels means less cornering grip and less braking authority exactly when the vehicle is longest and heaviest. This is what weight-distributing hitches are for: by applying a moment through spring bars they push load back onto the front axle without changing the total. They do not increase any rating, and on some vehicles the manufacturer forbids them, so check the handbook rather than assuming.
The plate on the vehicle is the authority
Every figure in this article is arithmetic performed on numbers somebody else supplied, and the numbers that count are the ones stamped on your own car. In Europe the manufacturer's plate, usually inside a door aperture or under the bonnet, carries the permissible laden mass, the permissible mass of the combination and the permissible mass on each axle, in that order, and the registration document repeats them. In North America the equivalent information is on the certification label and the tire and loading placard, with the tow rating and gross combination weight rating in the owner's manual. Where the plate and a brochure disagree, the plate wins.
It is also worth knowing why brochure figures are not directly comparable across manufacturers or across markets. In North America, the voluntary SAE J2807 standard defines a common test procedure — a specified grade, a specified launch, a specified cooling requirement — and manufacturers who follow it produce numbers that mean the same thing. Manufacturers who do not follow it are quoting something else. In Europe, the permissible combination mass is a type-approval value granted under the masses and dimensions regulation, not a marketing claim, but it can still differ between two apparently identical cars because of the engine, the transmission or an optional towing pack. Read the plate for the specific vehicle, then do the arithmetic for the specific load you are carrying that day. Any calculator, this site's included, is a way of checking your own numbers, never a substitute for them.

- What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?
- The gross vehicle weight rating caps the tow vehicle on its own — curb weight plus fuel, occupants, luggage, accessories and the tongue weight the trailer presses onto the hitch. The gross combination weight rating caps the vehicle and the trailer added together. They are independent constraints and either can bind first. On a vehicle with a 4,500 lb curb weight, a 5,600 lb GVWR and a 10,500 lb GCWR, a lone driver at 180 lb has 920 lb of payload left, so the GVWR would permit a 9,200 lb trailer at 10% tongue weight — but the GCWR permits only (10,500 − 4,680) ÷ 1.1 = 5,290 lb, so the combination rule wins. Load three more adults and 150 lb of luggage and the payload shrinks to 230 lb, the GVWR now permits only 2,300 lb of trailer, and the roles reverse. Compute both every time, take the smaller, and then check it against the trailer rating and the tongue limit as well.
- Why does carrying passengers reduce how much I can tow?
- Because passengers and tongue weight come out of the same payload budget, and because the trailer counts twice in the combination limit. Payload is the gross vehicle weight rating minus the curb weight — 1,100 lb on our example vehicle. Every pound of person, bag or roof box is a pound no longer available for the vertical load the trailer puts on the hitch. At a 10% tongue weight, each pound of payload spent removes ten pounds of permissible trailer. Add a passenger at 180 lb and you have just removed 1,800 lb of towing capacity, which is why the effect is so much larger than people expect. The combination limit adds a second, smaller penalty: because the vehicle's own mass appears in the combination total, each pound aboard also removes about a pound of trailer under that rule. Weigh what you are actually carrying rather than estimating it — a full family and their holiday luggage routinely exceed a guess by a hundred pounds or more.
- How much nose weight should a trailer have?
- Enough to keep the trailer's centre of mass ahead of its axle, and never more than the vehicle's stated limit. North American practice for a conventional ball hitch is ten to fifteen per cent of the loaded trailer weight; European practice is broadly five to seven per cent, alongside a hard limit in kilograms that appears on the vehicle plate and on the towbar. Both bands exist to keep the trailer stable, and both are upper-bounded by the equipment. Watch for the squeeze at maximum trailer weight: a 500 lb tongue limit is exactly 10% of a 5,000 lb trailer, so a fifteen per cent load-out would be 750 lb, half again over the limit. Measure it rather than guessing — a nose-weight gauge costs very little — and adjust by moving the load forward or back inside the trailer, not by pretending the number is fine.
- Why is too little nose weight more dangerous than too much?
- Because the two failures have different shapes. Excess nose weight overloads the rear axle and unloads the front, so the vehicle understeers, brakes less well and rides badly. That is dangerous, but it is continuous and legible: the driver feels the steering go light long before anything happens. Insufficient nose weight puts the trailer's centre of mass behind its own axle, and that changes the sign of the feedback. A small yaw disturbance now generates a force that increases the yaw instead of correcting it, so the oscillation grows cycle by cycle. Below a critical speed it damps out; above it, it diverges. The driver's instinctive reactions — steering into it, braking hard — often make it worse, and the transition from a barely perceptible weave to a jackknife can take only a few seconds. Because the mechanism is a stability threshold rather than a gradual degradation, there is no useful warning, which is exactly what makes it the more dangerous error.
- Where do I find my vehicle's real towing limits?
- On the vehicle itself, not in a brochure and not on a forum. In Europe the manufacturer's plate — normally in a door aperture, on the bulkhead or under the bonnet — lists the permissible laden mass, the permissible mass of the combination and the permissible mass on each axle, and the registration document repeats them; the towbar carries its own plate with a maximum trailer mass and a maximum nose weight, and the lower of the two sets applies.
