From father + land. Compare Dutch vaderland (“fatherland”), German Vaterland (“fatherland”), Danish fædreland (“fatherland”), Icelandic föðurland (“fatherland”). Does not continue Middle English fæderland, from Old English fæderland. First attested in the 1620s.
